Want more distortion

Post by LP's Rock » Wed Jan 13, 2010 8:19 am

:?: I built my 50 watt kit a year ago and have put at least 200 hours on it since and it sounds great but.......

I saw a You Tube demo clip of a Marshall 1987x reissue and it was providing some serious distorted tones with the volume at 4. I need to get to 6 or 7 before things really break loose. Right now I'm using Svetlana power tubes and Tungsol preamp tubes. Could a change to different tubes make that much difference and if so could someone recommend which ones to try? I haven't biased in a long time so I don't know where that stands. Could the bias also make that much difference?

Thanks in advance for the help. :D

one pot on 4 = another pot on 6. also, with a 5000pf bright cap there is a lot of breakup at lower settings since the vol pot is almost bypassed.

try a hotter bias and RTF preamp tubes

RFT 12ax7's do seem to have more gain than most.

It's one of the amp reviews on http://www.ProGuitarShop.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I googled Marshall 1987X and it was one of the vids that popped up.

I am not familiar with RTF tubes. I will do a search.

Thanks

Yikes. Tubetramp does them for about 1/2 that.
