FR recessed versus NON
I'm putting together a super strat type guitar, FR, EVH HB, Rear load body, just a volume knob sort of thing, and I don't know anything about these recessed Floyds. I've picked up a trem already and don't want it recessed. I'm assuming any FR trem can be installed either way? But then how does the height of the strings line up? Is there a gotcha in there somewhere?
Thanks
Doug

On a recessed option, the mounting posts will be the same as with no-recessed, only on recessed you can raise the pitch and some wood underneath the base of the floyd is removed, unless you are a pull-up freak the I would go with flush mount that rests on the body.
ibanez guitars to name a few are recessed, you have to change your technique of tuning and retuning the guitar to get the floyd back to the original or desired position, I just use common sense and tune close, get the floyd close and tune down fron the high E to the low, that way the tension dosen't throw you off or you can use a trem setter.

You will need an angled neck pocket for a non recessed floyd as well so the angle of the neck will be correct in relation to the bridge.

so the guys routing the body, knowing it's not recessed, would probably do the neck pocket right I'd assume?

You just need to let them know it's a non recessed floyd.Doug H wrote:so the guys routing the body, knowing it's not recessed, would probably do the neck pocket right I'd assume?

Exactly, the neck pocket on a 'top mounted' floyd isnt as deep, than a stock Fender type or recessed floyd. Top mounted raises your picking hand a bit (i dont like this), as compared to the Fender/or recessed. Keep this in mind, as it really affects alternate picking (if your used to Fender/or recessed). The tone of the Top mounts is better to me though.

k, I'm still a bit fuzzy on this. I had a floyd installed on a strat once, it was a surface mount. I could pull up a bit, not that I really cared. I can't remember the string height off the body, but I don't think they re routed the neck.
What about the famous Franky? did it have elevated strings due to the lack of neck pocket angle?
I'd like to keep the general string profile of a Fender and don't care if I can pull up. Do you only need the recessed if you want to pull up? otherwise the standard Fender pocket and surface mount is fine?
