PU wiring info ?

Post by Tone Slinger » Thu Feb 18, 2010 9:32 am

I got a hb'er in the bridge of my strat, and a single coil in the neck, one volume and a three way selector blade. I always use a 500k pot, 'cause the hb'er need's it. problem is, the single coil is too bright. I need the single coil to sound like it's on a 250k pot.

I have been told that wiring a resistor to the hot to ground wire of the single coil might work. Any suggestion's ?

I've never tried what you're describing, but it sounds like it might work. You'd be giving the signal from the single coil "x" amount of a resisted pathway to ground ("x" being whatever resistor you choose), where it has none now (except of course, thru the 500k pot, which is giving you too much resistance, and therefore too much brightness on the single coil).

You might even try putting a small cap wired in series with the resistor, making what acts like a wide open fake tone circuit. (For example, a 250k resistor in series with a .01 cap would act like a tone circuit (on "10") utilizing those values).

I think you're gonna have to experiment with this one, TS, but DO post what you find out... Im interested to know if it works.

Hey Tone Slinger, yeah, I have my strat wired that way. I had the same problem after I put a HB in the bridge of my strat & needed to use a 500k pot to make the HB sound good, but the single coils were too bright sounding. I did some research on some of the pickup forums & read about the resistor trick, so I tried it. I just took two 250k resistors & put one on the neck & one on the middle single coil hot wires & put the other ends to ground & sure as shit it worked. :D It took the brightness out & made them sound like they used to. Give it a try. You could probably experiment with other resistor values, but I just wired it up & it worked, so I stopped there.

Great, thanks guy's, I'm definatly gonna do this. I hope to get it right off, but, if not, I'll be throwing different value's along with possibly the cap (another great idea).

I'm still in the process of assembling and modifying the pieces for my latest guitar (basically waiting for the tuner's and pick guard, which I'm gonna 'custom' break/saw(pick guard that is) :D ) I will post clip's with the results.
