Re: Debate on Eddie's Plexi
repositioned the NFB wire a bit further away from others and switched to 16 ohm selector. noise largely gone. the remaining distortion i was talking about was caused by the Hot Plate. bypassing it the amp is so rich and clean its amazing. loud as hell too! my slave setup is in CA so gonna be tough to evaluate it as it should be until we're settled in the new digs. should have bought that Faustine that was on here last week...
thx guys

I can recomend a Power Brake... with some twists and mods ( very easy ) it's very transparent...

Re: Debate on Eddie's Plexi
Just checked ebay for power brakes. One is $400 for the buy it now price.Ralle wrote:I can recomend a Power Brake... with some twists and mods ( very easy ) it's very transparent...
The other is $229 with 30 minutes left.
I thought they weren't well regarded and I'd be able to pick it up for a song? They're up with with Airbrakes and other better-regarded attenuators.

Re: Debate on Eddie's Plexi
I bought a new one when they first came out. it was about $360 new at the time. I just got a different one on ebay about six months ago for $100 shipped w/ buy it now. I got lucky I guess but 400 is WAY too much. I could see spending 150 or so.
Gotta be patient....

Re: Debate on Eddie's Plexi
It sounds like your talking about the pre-amp filter caps which are on the board feeding the first 2 tubes. The phase inverter 3rd tube is powered by the cap mounted externally on top on the chassie next to the power transformer. This is the only cap visible on a 12 series without taking the amp out of the headbox and looking inside. If I misunderstood you, just ignore me.StuntDouble wrote:I'm curious as to what you guys are using for the P.I. filter cap. Anything higher than 32uf+32uf is really hard to find in an axial cap and the radial can caps from F&T are too wide to fit well there, and when you have to use two, they extend pretty far off the board.
I hear a difference in pre-amp filter caps. I've always liked sprague atoms. F&Ts work just fine. I had some ARS 32/32 with gold lettering that sounded wonderful, LCR always sound fantastic ic but my favorites for Marshall are actual old Dalys (eries too - same brand???). They just sound right. So far I've had really good luck reforming old ones using the instructions from Larry in the mods/restoration forum (Thanks Larry!!) I've noticed some new builds of people here sounding good using some nondescript black caps. If anyone knows what I'm talking about and can identify them I'd love to know what they are. JJs maybe with the lettering underneath? I have yet to try JJs.

Re: Debate on Eddie's Plexi
Ahhhh
I've been messing with Mojave's too long, where the PI filter cap IS on the preamp board. I just looked at a 1200 layout and schematic...yeah, PI filter cap is on top...feeling a little retarded right now.
Anyways, yeah, I've tried the 32uf evox/rifa; I have them on the screens in my Mojave and 100uf F&T mains, 22uf preamp filtering. PI filtering is a 47uf evox/rifa. I love that amp.

Where do you get evox rifas at? The ones I found at mouser are too high values. I think I have TADs in my preamp.

Re: Debate on Eddie's Plexi
I found some from a guy in the Neatherlands on ebay that has em...the P.I. filter cap is a 100uf TAD/Ruby Gold also; I forgot that I upped that from 47uf. There's a shop in England that has a good selection of Evox/Rifas too.

I'm hoping the quality doesn't go down now that Kemet has bought them out.
