Jim, are you starting over from scratch or do you have the formula from your original line of speakers?Scumback Speakers wrote:Froumy, I appreciate your concerns, but I'm well past replicating what I had already offered previously! Some have wondered if I had the "Weber" formula or if I had to start from scratch. I think it's important to note that I had been aging cones in California previously to working with Weber, and I got those from Celestion. I have the Weber Scumback treatment details. Ted emailed that to me years ago, and in a separate email he included a statement that if Weber couldn't keep up with production he would refer me to a high volume manufacturer and I'd have to do the cone treatment before having them built. I've also worked on new treatments (which is why I'll have a BlackBack era speaker coming out soon) for new tones.
All of the M/J/H/Scumnico tones were dialed in at the end of May with side by side testing in identical cabs, amps, guitars. I brought over a few different players to confirm what I had built as well besides my own ears.
What I'm working on now is the paper voice coil prototypes that got terminated by Weber. There's a back story to that which I can't discuss online yet, but when I can everyone will understand why Weber could no longer be considered as a manufacturer of my speaker line. It's a sad ending to a 7 year agreement, one which I tried to get back on track but couldn't.

Change is good, I look forward to your new venture! Your help to me and others on this forum has been invaluable. Mars, I answered that above already sir! I shortened the answer for you.Mars Hall wrote:Jim, are you starting over from scratch or do you have the formula from your original line of speakers?Scumback Speakers wrote: Some have wondered if I had the "Weber" formula or if I had to start from scratch. Glad to have helped you (and others) in the Metro forum, and other online gear forums. I never got the paper voice coil prototypes from Weber VST. They sent them to me as 8 ohm models instead of the 16 ohm versions I spec'd. Sending out speakers with the wrong ohm rating, and power handling was a recurring issue over the years. I sent them back to get 16 ohm versions, which they never made for me. I waited three months, and demanded a credit to my Visa.Strat78 wrote: Change is good, I look forward to your new venture! Since I never got the right ones, I never mounted them to test/play. I have a source for the paper voice coils and will order some when production starts. I have a late 67 slant cab here with original G12M 20w in it to use for comparison. A neat bit of history on the cab is that it was previously owned by Queen, Dokken, and some band named Nazgul.
It sounds insanely good, so that will be the "tone target" of my new PVC project. The PVC speakers will be sold without warranty due to the low power of the coils and how careful you must be with them for power applied to them. They'll definitely be a dual 4x12 setup for a Super Lead type amp, and a 50w amp will need four of them. While the coils will be rated for 30w, we all know that Marshalls can put out almost double their rated power if they are the solid state rectified models with EL34 power tubes.

Thanks shakti. Nice to have some inventory control for a change, instead of begging/pleading/cajoling the company you were paying well to build your speakers for you.shakti wrote:Great to hear that you're back on track, Jim! Go PVC!!
I got a nice boost this morning when Steve Stevens offered to do some testing of the new speakers when they're ready to go over on the HRI forum. The guy is so humble it amazes me.

Sorry Jim, I wasn't being sarcastic. I don't know how the hell I missed that, the first time I read it. Working 72 hours a week has it drawbacks, I guess.Scumback Speakers wrote:Mars, I answered that above already sir! I shortened the answer for you.

Ah, no worries Mars. I'm having a real laugh reading all of the posts online at the various forums from those who know Webers' side of the story. There is so much conjecture, outright fabrications, and total lies going on it's just hilarious.Mars Hall wrote: Sorry Jim, I wasn't being sarcastic. I realize this is a hot bed of conversation. I really wish I could post online all of the details, but there are cooler heads than mine telling me to wait. Trust me when I say, I'm not the one worried about how I'll look when the truth comes out. Until that time is appropriate, however, I can't reveal what I know. Sorry!

Every Scumback and Weber that I have owned have been excellent. I love the Scumbacks for Celestion-type tones. The M75 is my favorite.

I've tried to keep an open mind during all of this. It must have been tough to keep silent as long as you did. I think anyones first instinct is to defend yourself, but having the sense that you're on the "right" side of things, has it's calming affects.Scumback Speakers wrote:Ah, no worries Mars. My most recent dealing with Weber was less than perfect, to say the least. They being the only game in town for the size and specs of what I needed, left me little choice. All in all, they finally got it right. Just makes you realize that TA, ain't no Ted.

You should be really proud of what you accomplished Jim. I am very glad this is working out and you have made the announcement. It is hard to hold ones tongue when there is so much crap flying around. It was always your ears that were the real value and only you have those.

FWIW I was going to buy the weber legacies as they're cheaper but now I'm gonna deal with scumback instead. Mostly it's the straightforward explanation here coupled with the horrendous customer service I've gotten from Weber in the past.

Re: Who is building Scumback Speakers now?
The good news is really exciting, I for one I'm beyond excited about the PVC speakers. Jim, thanks for taking your time to speak to me about speakers and the PVC. I'm not going to get into any of the negative discussions, but there are companies who make the top of the line product, and there is everyone else. Once I got into guitar amps seriously it didn't take me long to realize Scumback were, in my opinion, my favorite guitar speaker company. I can't wait to hear about all of these new speakers, I'm going to have to build more amps so I can have more speakers, haha.

Jim,
I can't thank you enough for all that you've shared with the amp building community. I started a refurb of a 1972 checkerboard 4x12 slant cab a couple weekends ago and couldnt have done it without your awesome pictorials of your own refurb projects. I've never ordered scumbacks from you, but will certainly do so down the road to fill that cab up properly when I'm done with it.
Here's to your continued and growing success and taking on more of your own operation in-house!
May "post-Weber" be the new "pre-Rola"!

It's great having the 'SPEAKER KING' around. It is really good to know that there is someone out there (Jim) who is so knowledgable of speakers. So when the paper cones finally give out on the ORIGINAL Celestion speakers , there will still be NEW speakers there that are very similar,, because there are people who are passionate and interested enough to do things the right way.
