Finally got a Les Paul

Post by dirtydeeds22 » Mon Sep 06, 2004 8:33 pm

Hey fellas,
Long time since the last post. New Job, new house, and baby girl 5-17-04; has kept me tired and busy. I've got great news. I finally got a Les Paul. A 2001 LP Standard Plus with AA light burst top. I'm sooo psyched, it's barely left my hands since friday. I took a chance off ebay, but I did good. Beautiful, with a sweet neck, not too beefy and not to thin. The only thing that sucked is that I had to sell my Black 77 Tele Deluxe to buy it, but I couldn't deal anymore without a LP. The Tele Deluxe sounded great, but the LP sounds awesome with my Metro board modded 1959 SLP. I've rejoined the fold.......

 SHWEEEET!!! I'm a bit green with envy. Right now, I can only afford Orville Les Paul (Japanese Gibson) but I try to make it up with SD PUs. Hopefully, someday..... "sigh"

Welcome to the Les Paul club. Now all you need are some hulking strings and a pickguard!

Sweet axe!!! I love the fact that Gison made a guitar in the early 50's that got nearly eveything right. And people have been trying to copy it ever since. Same with Stratocasters.

Sweet Axe.

About the only "New" design that has been successful is the PRS and even that is a variation on both the Strat and LP.

But isn't it the same with Amps, too. Lets face it, modern metal sounds are just a cranked 60's amp with a better fuzz box! And the other sounds are just trying to get a cranked Marshall tone at less than ear splitting volumes.

Pickguard or no-pickguard

Post by dirtydeeds22 » Tue Sep 07, 2004 6:09 pm

I guess the biggest quandry right now is whether to put the pickguard on. I have always liked the pickguard look. I think the LP would look like Jimmy Page's with the guard on, but that's me. The only problem is that there is no installation hardware except the guard. What size screws do you use, and is there a special drilling technique you use so the finish doesn't get fucked up. Any thoughts?

The screws come with the pickguard. When you are ready to tap the holes in the guitar, use the tip of a pen to make a little divit in the finish so the drill bit won't wander off it's mark. Make note of the screw depth on the drill bit by wrapping a small piece of tape around the bit so you don't go to deep. Put on the pickguard and get ready to have a more authentic looking guitar!!

P.S. Get Grover tuners. Way better then the plastic Gibson Deluxe tuners and guess what... Jimmy Page used them!

Screws didn't come with the guitar!

Post by dirtydeeds22 » Wed Sep 08, 2004 12:38 am

Country boy,
The screws didn't come with the guitar. Ebay. I checked the screw length on the control cavity covers and I'm guessing they probably use the same size for the guard. What do you think?

Forgot to mention the LP has Grovers!!!!!

When you get the pickguard, screws should be in the package.

The screw will come with the pickguard but you have to buy the mounting bracket for the pickguard seperately.

I can only afford Orville Les Paul (Japanese Gibson)
I have an Orville by Gibson which uses the USA hardware and pickups and I like it as much or better than my USA Gibby. I would say they are easily as nice as the Gibsons.

No Screws!!

Post by dirtydeeds22 » Wed Sep 08, 2004 6:24 pm

I looked everywhere in that case for possible screws. None! Pickguard, mounting bracket are there, but no screws. I ordered some Gibson replacement screws from Stewart Macdonald. Should be here in 3 days. The LP definitely needs the guard. They just look better.

Refering to the Orville Les Paul, you'll get one one day. The only way I could get one was to sell my 77 Tele Deluxe that I really liked. I just needed to get the LP.

Love your Paul

Post by Bluesbishop » Tue Sep 14, 2004 6:10 pm

I have the EXACT Les Paul...I LOVE IT!! I bought mine new through APlus Guitars, and I had the same problem, new in box and no screw for the pickguard.

The only change I would make are the pick ups, the stock pups are ok ( the Newer Gibson Burstbuckers rock!,...but those 498 just don't have that PAF tone) I highly recommend Lindy Fralins if you truly want a PAF tone, or Voodoo pick ups. If $money is tight, the SD '59 are great P/U for the bucks.

I've always used a small piece of masking tape on the guitar body when I've had to drill through the finish. Making the dent with the pen will work, but finishes have a tendency to crack around the hole and might take a chip out. Ive done it several times to beater guitars before someone told me about the tape trick. Once you are done drilling the hole just remove the tape and there you go.

BTW sweet Paul. Always wanted one but would rather spend my money on building my own neck throughs.
