Haze, I don't know if you realized this but you just refuted your own testimony when you said jfets behave (more like pentodes than triodes) as we know both modes of operation are used in vacuum tube design. However, if you're saying that jfets do not replicate the preamp section of a tube amp (triode operation), or amps that run the output tube section in a triode configuration, then that would be open to further interpretation.

Something to consider, you should set your tone controls flat to start when using a pedal. This will give you the best representation of what the pedal does. Tweak to taste from there. Of course with a Marshall you would roll back the bass pot, just go flat with mids and treble.

Lefty Lou I've meant exactly what you sad. Not trying to be a wise guy, only started a second year in the Institute. I just wanted to say that some times people misunderstand the meaning "Jfets - to tube sound". Sorry If i wasn't clear on that. I spend a lot of time on hi-fi audio forums, and they talk about this all the time.

So, after doing some research and hearing some side by sides of several pedals, I took a huge plunge and got a Joyo Vintage overdrive. A couple of the videos I watched had the Joyo sounding identical to a TS9.

Anyway, I am very happy with it...(especially after switching knobs to something a bit more vintagey looking.

It is a really fun pedal to play with. Works well with a plexi as long as the volume is below 3 or so. Also works well with single coils.

One thing I tried is using it as a clean boost. Turning the drive way down and the volume up. I was able to get very close to to tone of a cranked plexi with the MXR 6 band EQ minus the hiss.

If I'm gonna put a tube screamer style box in front of my plexi,I actually like my 'Bad Monkey'. The best though,imo,is a boss ge-7,that is if all your looking for is to boost the sound of the amp. I need to give a micro amp a shot though, Stef and Ralle seemvery happy with thiers (micro amp).

Tone Slinger, tell me if the attached "Demo Clip" clip on the attached link sounds anything like your Bad Monkey pedal. I think that some of the effects that Digitech has come up with for the iStomp pedal are taken directly from existing designs like the Digitech Bad Monkey f.e.

Ok, here are some pictures of the Joyo Vintage Overdrive. It has a Texas Instruments RC4588 chip, I think that is a very good thing.

It is! It is! I've been perusing the Joyo line of effects for awhile. I wanted the crunch distortion, only with the Great White shark graphics but, unfortunately you can't get those graphics on the Joyo CD pedal in the U.S.

Yeah, perfect for mods. I have the compressor. It has the same chip as the old MXRs Dynacomp once had as well.

I'm to understand that with the newer Joyo pedals, they're using surface mount technology (SMT) such that if you've got a pair of tweezers, a soldering station, and some SMT parts then it becomes entirely feasible to mod. Other than that, Joyo pedals are modable just like any other pedal.

The build style of that joyo sort of reminds me of my early '90's Ibanez Soundtank Tube Screamer Ts-5. The switch is obviously independant of the main board on the Joyo though, whereas the ts-5 was on the board. Those little on/off switches Ibanez used on those Soundtanks wear out fairly quickly. I actually like the op-amp used on those TS-5's. I have the names written down of the op-amps I've used,but as I recall I liked the stock one used in the ts-5 best with the one Ibanez used in the ts-9's 2nd and the one used in the ts-808 3rd. And that was just differences in op-amps, I didnt do any more mods to that pedal.

I used to have a shitload of transistors, IC's, diodes, resistors, that would now be collectible (and/or) hard to come by from my electronics vo-tech school back in the 80's. My second wife, now ex-wife tossed all these parts. It still pisses me off to this day.

Man, that sucks big time. I think your right about Digitech. They base that stuff on existing models I'd say. The 'Bad Monkey' is great ON TOP of a hot amp, but imo, if its used to fetch up the bulk of the dirt,it isnt as good as Ibanez TS models. Just not as warm and alive to the touch.The caps and resistors are like SUPER micro spec small.
I'm actually VERY impressed with the insides of that Joyo pedal. Looks to be a great bargain
