Web Hosting - what to choose?

Post by Bainzy » Sat Feb 04, 2006 8:14 pm

I've got an email from my web hosting company (123-reg.co.uk) that the hosting for my website Shredaholic is going to expire next month. The hosting with this company has been good, the servers have only been down once for an hour or two last year and that was all I can remember. Uploading is pretty easy via FrontPage, which is what I like to use for editing the site.

I'm not sure though whether I'm getting the best value for money. I went with them because I got a cheap domain with them and I assumed I'd need hosting with them for the files to carry the same domain address (eg. shredaholic.com/file.html). Since then I've seen much cheaper deals - my hosting package is £2.99 a month for 250MB space and 3000MB bandwidth. The rest is irrelevant to me, they throw in a bunch of free stuff and all I use is the email address forwarding for 3 addresses. We're starting to run out of bandwidth again (after upgrading last year) and the next hosting package up will cost me £48 to renew my hosting.

Really what I'm asking is, should I change to hosting with a cheaper US site with lots more bandwidth? All I care about is having about 250MB or more space, plenty of fast reliable bandwidth, 3 forwarding email addresses (I wouldn't use their inbox) and support for different scripts would be nice.

Also, Can I keep my domain with 123-reg and point it towards hosting with a new company?
