Post by awangotango » Thu Jun 12, 2014 3:06 am

pretty cool tone early akira takasaki. I've not heard my marshalls sounds this tight and clear but fat. Anyone know what mod this was? lee Jackson work on his amps?

'Thunder In The East' was the CROWN JEWEL for me, as far as being, in my mind, the DEFINITIVE guitar tone that I was trying to get. I was 14 when it came out ('85) and I was knocked out by the tone and playing on that album. Obviously, over the years I have come to find a tone/s that work better forme than that, but back in the '80's, that 'Thunder In The East' tone was PERFECT for my mindset. He used a Jose Arrendondo modded JMP/s on that album and the tour. He went to Lee Jackson on the next album tour.

I'm not sure, but I think that Akira used a Boss (or other Japanese company) od or distortion up front. He was very much into that almost 'synthetic' sci/fi 'Ultraman' type tone. VERY 'Japanese' sounding, if that makes sense.

yeh his tone has a processed aspect but 90% of it sounds raw marshall. It's a neat combo. The processed aspect is heard in the pinch harmonics and is behind the main tone in a way and I bet whatever mod Jose Arrendondo did is the main reason for it's sound and not an od pedal. I'd be interested in learning what mod it is. I've tried two of his master mods and neither sounded like this tone. I should search yahoo and try and figure out if anyone knows.

Saw them open for Motley Crue on the Loudness "Thunder In the East, Tour in the West". Stayed for the Crue, but I was was there to see Loudness. "Harow Kansas City!" "We are Loudness, and we are here to Rock you!" :hairband:

That entire "Thunder In the East" LP was kick-ass! I have a tour program from it somewhere around here with lots of pictures...

Killer riff for sure, really unique . Man, it would have been great if Loudness had been opening for the Crue on the stretch of the tour when they came here in NC. On the Theatre Of Pain when they came here I believe it was Autograph who opened (I just knew it wasnt Loudness). I later found out, via Circus or Hit Parader, that Loudness had opened alot on that tour. That was obviously way before the net. News took weeks and months to spread back then.

No expert on Loudness or Takasaki but found the same pickup he supposedly used -- ESP LH 200 -- in a box of old stuff, selling it on ebay:

I tell ya, there is an amp out there currently that can sound scary close to Akira's Jose modded Marshall, as heard on 'Thunder In The East' and tour. Imo, the Cameron 'Atomica' is very close and that amp is 'supposidly' based on a particuarly nice sounding Jose modded Marshall. Of course 'ol Cameron has given it more eq range (like more bottom end if desired). Also, the Splawn 'Quick Rod' gets fairly close. Both of those amps pay homage to that ultimate '80's style modded Marshall tone.

I agree it's probably the 'atomica' . problem is I don't know the details and not able to pay 3k to find out.

The "Atomica" pretty much nails the Thunder in the East tone and it can do much more. Great amp IMO!!   Now I don't play it as much as my Fortin/Gower KK++ Marshall JCM 800 2203, but it is nice to have to change things up a bit.
