Jimi Hendrix' Gear and Mods at West Coast Organ and Amp

His guitar slung across his back, his dusty boots is his cadillac.

I tried the link again too, and ended up on a dating site, with beautiful girls all over my screen, and the thing wouldn't let go of my computer.
That's part of the fun of this whole exercise.

I'm going to ask Xplorer to post some pics of a real Jimi Hendrix amp (the 1966 Guild Quantum amp) which came to West Coast Organ and Amplifier Service for service in 1968. I think I have the owner of the amp talked into allowing us to view the insides. I might get the photos today, cross your fingers.
Once again, it's only photographic evidence, but it might help substantiate some of the stories I have related here, at least it couldn't hurt.
If we get these you'll be able to see some of the mods and repairs, I'll do a commentary too for anyone interested.

We should re-host the file to a different site. Seem like people have problem with this host.

Here's the results of a really quick (three minute) analysis I did on the picture Xplorer posted. As you can see I came up with slighty different results. The problem with working pictures is linearity goes out the window because of camera lens geometery, camera angles (up and down, and left and right) to the primary object being photographed. Also, couple the foreground, middle ground, and background distorting/warping effects of both camera film and lens type makes for reconstructing a photo back to a somewhat linear object really tough. On top of that, you toss in a somewhat rough picture to start with and it just makes things more interesting.
BTW, everything is in inches.

BTW, where did this picture (the full version) come from? Is it from a book, magazine, album/cd sleeve, movie trailer, etc.,?

The most interesting thing I see in the picture is the bright ring on top, then a black space and then another bright ring which you get from a glass which is curving outward.
I have here in front of me a 1970 year 6550, and a 1970 year El34. What you notice immediately, is that the 6550 has flashing on the top of the bulb but not coming down the sides. Then, lower in the bulb, the flashing is on two sides of the bulb. In between is a dark space, the top portion of which has three mica spacers holding the upper mica disk in the center of the glass. So when you light the tube from a distance you see a bright flash on top, then a dark ring, and then a bright reflection from the curved glass and flashing on the sides of the tube.
The EL34 however, has all the flashing on the top, and it extends down the sides a bit. From there on down the tube is dark, and if you light it from a distance you do not see two bright rings because the bulb is straight, and the glass has no lower flashing.
Just for fun, try inserting some old 6550s in one of your Marshalls and then snap a pic from a distance, making sure to light it with some diffusion sort of like the Woodstock pics. Maybe we could recreate a pretty good approximation of the picture, blurriness and all.
At least it would be a fun experiment.

Okay here's some good news since folks seem to having a bad day.
Xplorer is going to post some pics of Jimi's 1966 Guild Quantum amp, never seen before shots of West Coast Organ and Amp Service's first repair job for Jimi Hendrix. The owner consented!
Jimi probably got this on the east coast at the very beginning of his time with Chas, and since Guild was right close by in NJ, it makes sense that there were a lot of Guild amps available in that area. Good chance it came from Manny's.
The numbers are all there if you want to track it down.
Hope this helps.
I'll explain the repairs and mods if you want.

Interesting. Still grainy would be nice if we could find a pic of the back of a amp with no cover :)
