A Different Kind Of (VH) Live Album...

Post by chrisom » Mon Apr 13, 2015 12:12 am

Ran into an old buddy I hadn't seen in decades. We used to party and rock out to the first 4 Van Halen albums in high school (late '78-mid '82) and we all went to concerts together back in the day. Went over to meet his family, I already knew his old lady from high school, but now they have kids and grandkids. Given the current state of Van Halen, I wanted to give him a Classic VH update, but there wasn't alot good to say about Van Halen's latest live LP, so I thought about making up a compilation CD of my own, featuring some of the better-recorded live cuts off YouTube that feature the 'best' live DLR vocals and Eddie guitar tones, plus a sampling of newer stuff for him to jam out to. Here's what I came up with:

1.) 1979 Dance The Night Away 3:17
2.) 1979 You're No Good 3:04
3.) 1979 Bottoms Up! 3:16
4.) 1981 "So This Is Love?" - Oakland, CA [HIGHEST QUALITY] 3:46
5.) Guitar Solo 1984 Tour - Kansas City, MO 6-20-84 11:16
6.) 1981 "Hear About It Later" - Oakland, CA [HIGHEST QUALITY] 4:58
7.) 1981 "Unchained" - Oakland, CA [HIGHEST QUALITY] 5:10
8.) 1979 First Tour Fresno 19:22
BONUS TRACKS:
9.) 'Van Halen Jam' by Sean McFly 2:15
10.) Outta Space 2:54
11.) Stay Frosty 4:08
12.) Me Wise Magic 6:06

If the band had worked up a live version of Me Wise Magic for this live album, I would have bought it for that alone. Shame that song has been buried.

I don't think Ed likes messing with the Transtrem live.

Yeah, I had considered that. I don't think he could have even handled taking that on in 2007. I don't think he'd even want to consider playing that song every night in 2015.

Would have been cool, though, as Ed is playing so good now and seems healthy and focused -- if he could have put his nose to the grindstone to pull that song off live only for 2 or 3 nights for a live recording.

I think "Me Wise Magic" and "Can't Get This Stuff No More" are better than anything on ADKoT ...

I've never been hot on "Can't" but I think Magic would have fit just fine on ADKoT

I just found this on YouTube, and listened to it:
Van Halen Greensboro NC 1981 'Fair Warning Tour" (Audio - Full Concert)
Not the greatest recording, but not bad. I'm glad somebody put it out there. This is the pinnacle of Van Halen's Live work as far as I'm concerned... It has an extended intro to first song of concert (On Fire), shades of the ending of the yet unreleased 'Hot For Teacher' in one of the outro solos, a pre-Diver Down 'Cathedral' plus all those great 'Fair Warning' tunes. I trimmed out some of the hack standards (RWTD, YRGM, 1st Drum solo- there's another one at the start of EBWS) to get it to fit on my CD, and relocated the 'slapping' part of the big guitar solo onto the beginning of 'Mean Street', where it belongs. DLR's voice and his "Dave-isms" are just like I remember from back in high school days. This is the epitome of classic VH for me! :vh: :listen:
Aug 25th 1981 Van Halen laid waste to Greensboro, North Carolina. This is supposedly an upgraded bootleg. It sounds great and is one of the few 1981 concerts recorded. Enjoy! Some of these pics came from the Van Halen Rising tumblr. A fantastic collection of pics, go check them out!
1. On Fire
2. Sinner's Swing
3. Drum solo
4. Hear About it Later
5. So This is Love?
6. Jamie's Crying
7. Bass solo
8. Running with the Devil
9. Dance the Night Away
10. Sunday Afternoon in the Park
11. Romeo Delight
12. Everybody Wants Some
13. Sounds of Summer
14. Ice Cream Man
15. Mean Street
16. Guitar solo (Eruption, Spanish Fly, Cathedral)
17. Feel Your Love Tonight

The ending to "Hot for Teacher" used to be the live ending to "Mean Street".

It was ending to Voodoo Queen which more or less became Mean Street

Strangely, one of the best sounding Van Hagar live shows on YouTube was also at Tokyo Dome in 1989...
The guitar sound and vocals are excellent...

It's a good thing they didn't decide to record She's the Woman before Fair Warning. STW had the funky breakdown bit before the solo that's currently in Mean Streets...."Dance baby.."
