Gotoh Floyd or Schaler Floyd or Original Floyd?

Post by EVH » Sun May 17, 2015 4:00 am

I am kinda partial to the Gotoh Floyd. What the forumites' thoughts? I will buy a brass big block, too. Too bad there isn't a floyd with a brass nut and or brass saddles.

I have a GOTOH 1996T with big brass block ready for my next Northern Ash Fat Strat build.

The quality is top notch. I know Jimi installed one, but went back to a Lo Pro Edge because of the low profile, and both have the no slop bushing on the bar.

I use both the OFR and the GOTOH 1996. I really am impressed with the the gotoh and i can see why EBMM used it on the axis.
It is basically the same as my OFR but the fine tuners are set back on a angle so they are out of the way more and the action on them is smoother.
all my floyds have the oversized brass blocks and i think it makes a difference.
I also love the ibanez edge and ZR trem.
The ZR is a incredible trem.it does not use knife edges like a floyd,it works on a cam with ball bearings
I have one on my Ibanez sabre and it will not go out of tune and always returns to the zero point. 8)

EBMM wanted to use the original Floyd and its on prototypes. I remember Ed being mad and acting like he designed the thing and now he couldn't get units to install on his new production guitars. Some issue with Floyd and Fender. I like the Gotoh. And the original. Actually the Gotoh is better for Intruder bar noise type effects so I choose that one!

Gotoh is a great trem. The fine tuners are much better and very smooth. Decent machining. Just good all around. But the original floyd is almost as good and I get along with it fine. Although I think it could come up a notch in quality there isn't really anything you cannot work with or around.
The schaller has inserts into what I believe is die cast base. Yucky. Not steel. Hardened inserts into diecast. Who wants a die cast baseplate??
I will pass.
Floyd sure. Choice? Gotoh for me.

Schaller had some quality issues at some point (Suhr switched to Gotoh at that time). Gotoh is fine for me.

I think some new life needs breathed into the trem market. Some more innovation.
Next axe I build will be locking tuners and a super vee blade runner. Some dudes get all wanked on this and that tonally.
Some guys say the spring steel will take a shit. Funny though. If you study metallurgy and its character.... when was the last time good quality spring steel failed on a classic car? Alot of that is still rollin out there. I think its a good take and can see it workin. Of course shit breaks eventually. But its a cool concept and eric johnson kinda nodded to this sytem. Even floyd pivots will wear.
So wth? Its totally reversible too.
The cam roller deal sounds tiitties but mass I think would play some factor in tone.
Sometimes you just gotta play and do instead of bein all dicked up on the playground because you forgot your mittens on a cold day :what:

I have a strat setup like this and it's very good. Locking vintage tuners, tusq nut and bladerunner setup to float. It stays in tune almost as well as a double locking Floyd.

The bar itself feels Floyd-ish, but with zero slop. The trem action makes Floyds feel inferior - it feels like there is a super tight connection to the guitar. There is also more acoustic resonance.

That being said, the Fender six screw still sounds the best to me, but I'm done playing those games. The bladerunner lets me bend, dive and pull up and comes right back in tune. Does great flutters too.

This thread from the Jackson/Charvel forum has some good pics and Floyd-Gotoh comparisons:

I agree with that OP about the Gotoh 1996T.
My main strat has one and it gets the best tone and has the smoothest feeling trem.

The main deal is still not a bad option with the original floyd though. And I LOVE my D Tuna and he denotes that Gotoh won't work with it.
The D tuna when set up correctly is awesome! Instant on the money everytime when you have it dialed in correctly and back again in a flash. So that kinda sucks it doesn't work with a gotoh.
My only gripe with my floyd is the fine tuners screw tips coumda been more consistently rounded and machined.
It is a bit eccentric in its action instead of being perfectly rounded. But you can work with it fine. The gotoh has no issues with this.

My EBMM Axis of course has a Gotoh Floyd. I put a D-tuner on immediately and it works perfectly. Aren't the Peavey branded Floyds on the Wolfgangs made by Gotoh too? I don't think you'll have a problem with any quality Floyd bridge.
