It is so cool to hear them play On Fire again. I have to agree, Eddie is getting some stellar tones now.
It sounds more like a traditional beefed up marshall tone now. 100% better than the last tour's tone!!!

So, if this is the EVHIIIS, it's plain awesome. Or is this the EL34 based amp?

Re: TONE, TONE, TONE
Stainless steel frets have so much less resistance to the strings as compared to nickel/silver frets......there is a very 'slight' tonal aspect to the nickel frets that have to do with the resistance of the strings though.....you get a warmer, rounder tone because of that resistance. SS frets are as quick to release the fretted tone as they are EASY for the strings to be bent across them.
Ed's tone does sound better here, but if he had a Destroyer or good copy of the '77-'79 era Franky, he'd sound better still

I don't think the stainless steel frets have any effect what so ever in eds new tone, the guitar yes, amps, most definitely! frets

"Tone? We've had this discussion here before. Some say that they think it sounds zingier or brighter. Not in my experience.....rather, they sound like new frets. That is to say the more a fret wears, the larger the flat spot is across the fret top and the mushier (may also be construed as warmer) the transient attack. But since the SS wears so much slower, that nice apex in the crown remains unworn for much much longer.
I did an experiment once where I installed a mix of traditional nickle/silver frets and SS frets on one neck. Not one person that played the guitar could tell which fret was which by the tone. Definitely you can tell by the feel though, especially when bending. SS frets are absolutely beautiful to bend on".
sorry to highjack the thread

I think that if the material is harder, the tone would be brighter. Probably why Original Floyds (hardened steel made in Germany) are much brighter than the old Fenders. Sure, there's more to it than just that but that hardened steel stuff (especially at the nut) plays a big role IMO. Not necessarily, always in a good way either.

Re: TONE, TONE, TONE
Yeah I would put hefty money on betting someone can't hear between SS frets and brand new CLEAN regular frets of the exact wire profile. I wouldn't wanna be the one to slam my dink under the toilet seat on this one in a blind listening test. It's just the feel and the wear that change. That's it.
Again-who likes worn frets?
It sucks when they do. Here's the cure. Run with it. Or be the kid that won't go on the playground without his mittens on in June. To each his own. I am over it and you can be too
Ed knows it doesn't do nothing to the tone or he wouldn't be using it either. Hes been there and done everything long before we did and he has embraced it clearly.
But yeah Eds getting his tone on again for sure here. It's only gonna get better from here on I think. Where he is goin is gonna put his amp sales over the top and I bet that's his goal.

I think Eddies tone nowdays suck. It´s so nasal and mid cocked. Just like on the new live album Tokyo Dome In Concert. But Eddie had a rather crappy sound live in the early 80´s also. It´s good on the Live Without A Net Video though.

Re: TONE, TONE, TONE
It's a much improved tone from ADKOT (for example) but not the tone this place was created from. Just my opinion.
