Definitely more of a raw Marshally tone than I heard on the ADKOT tour and the 2007 tour, I hope he keeps using it.
I'll see them on July 24th so I'll report back...

Just to throw out a random and possible thought....maybe Ed's "cocked wah" tone that we are hearing is actually from a cocked wah? In that sound check clip, near the end the tone creeps back to the tone we don't like. I am wondering if he possible had it on the entire time?

That means he stepped on that wah years ago and didn't remember to switch it off until just recently.

So no, I don't think that's very plausible.

DIRTY MOVIES! Are you kidding me?? Awesome man. One of my all-time fave tunes and tones for Ed. To me that's the ultimate Marshall with just enough "more" (gain) to make it awesome but not mud it out. The boys do it great here!

I was at that show and I was standing outside the venue during sound check. The tone was great, but it did not sound EL34 based to me. Then again, who knows. I did read somewhere that he brought the prototype EL34 amp with him, but would not be using it.

i bought a warmoth maple neck w/ stainless steel frets & I couldn't stand them. felt too hard & sounded too bright & thin. Sold the neck immediately.

slapped a an old fender maple neck back on and I was happy.

Yeah Howard Kaplan told me that Ed took one prototype on the road but said he was 99% sure he hadn't incorporated it into his rig. He's pretty positive you're hearing the stealth

After owning an original 5150 combo and the 50 and 100 watt Fender's, this Stealth amp sounds way better.

He used the Stealth on the previous tour as well. So they must have changed something, like the approach to miking or using quite different settings.
Now it sounds like most of us are used to a 5150 III sounding.

But I dig the tone Ed had using the Peaveys, more raw and punchy/harder. I need to get of of those again.

Well I saw the mighty VH last night in Chicago. I really enjoyed the show...the overall band mix was better than the 2007 and 2012 tours. Ed's guitar was more up front in the mix but not overpowering and everything else was well balanced.

The band played for two hours straight with a short drum solo and guitar solo and DLR intro to ICM and the $60,000 chili dog story...

Ed played well and really seemed to enjoy himself and seems to not really care what Roth does or doesn't do and kinds of accepts it...

I did like his guitar/amp tone, it seems less saturated than the last tours and less processed, I heard some delay, flange, phase as usual but the detune wasn't present as far as I could tell. It definitely was not 5150 tone more VHII.

I think Dave is actually making an effort to sing the tunes which was nice to see, he still is DLR so don't expect him to hit every word or note, he stopped doing that in 1980 when he became a showman. Like others said to hear LUTS and DM was worth the price of admission. I am still amazed how well Ed can play at 60 after having played 50 years of his life!

Ed's been using the same amps since 2012. It's a modified 5150 III. Sold to suckers like me as the Stealth 5150 III 100s head. 2012 line check before they came out was a suprise to me. Sounded exactly like my Peavey 5150 rhythym channel. Dark and not as fizzy as the lead channel. When he switched to an Art Series Charvel it sounded like crap. The nasty mid spike was overwhelming. At least in comparison to his Wolfgang Stealth guitar. Back at my house with my USA Wolfgang Stealth and 5150 it still sounded like his tone. Now I have a 5150 III 2x12 combo and it's clear no matter what numbers are on his amp they have similarities. 5150 III is a better sounding amp then the old Peavey. Which I still love. Ed's tone hasn't really changed since the III tour when he stopped using detune. Live I'm talking. Exception 2007 when he used duct tape to keep his wah on. Yes, that really happened. I think he was working on pickups and couldn't get what he wanted for a period of time. His tone improved later in the tour.

Tokyo Dome is a board mix into Pro Tools. That's why it sounds like crap guitar wise. It's not an accurate depiction of his live tone.

When I go to a VH show I insist on being on Ed's side as close as possible. Usually I don't even hear the pa. I can hear Ed's amp straight from the speakers on stage if close enough. And I listen very closely. Is his tone like it was in the Marshall days? Of course not. It's still very good.

I can't wait until the el34 amp comes out. Finally an Ed voiced version of his Marshall. Most of you will hate it. Guys will claim their amp is closer to the old sound. And some may be right. Ed owns the amp and the tones we chase. When he finally gives it to us we'll find ways to not like it.
