Looking at Fryette Power Station

Hey guys, thinking about getting a Fryette Power Station. I am getting to the point where I want to save my ears.

I heard this clip of the power station on youtube in the VH application and I was impressed. This is at super low volume. Read the description.

Also, this guy is using a Grosh Blown 59. He was the guy that created it. I am chatting with him now. Sounds like the Blown 59 is a cross between a SD59 and SD Custom Custom. 11.5k output!

What do you guys think? Anyone other then Dirtycooter use the Power Station? He gave me a great review on it.

I've got one and it is great, better than any of the more expensive attenuators I've had and with a great fx loop too, although I still kept my Alex, and Toneking Iron Man attenuator as they are pretty good units as well. Here is a clip I did just to get an idea of how it sounded recorded.

Wow man, that was you? LOL That was one of my favorite Youtube clips! haha I have a 2203 that I built just like this. I want to crank the 2203 and hit it with a boost pedal, but control the volume.

What do you think about the headroom? Does it still retain the 2203 headroom? How well does the EQ work on the unit?

Thanks, that was with no boost. 2203 volume at a about 4 oclock and pre gain at 2 oclock roughly if I recall. The eq works good to make it sound bigger or thicker with the depth knob and brighten and crisp it up some with the presence knob. Don't use the mini toggles much if at all. What do you mean about the headroom? The power station is reamping with its 50 watt power amp so not as much headroom available as there is without the power station.

Very cool. The gain was only at 2 oclock? I run mine all the way open. I wouldn't mind hearing a clip of the amp with the gain maxed and then click on a boost.
What I mean by headroom is the amp sounding big! That big; thick Marshall sound. I guess; as you stated, the EQ will take care of that. Reason I ask is with my THD Hotplate the amp starts to sound small the quieter you go. Not as beefy or thick.
Whats up with the toggles? Are you not really in to them? Not sound as good as the presence and depth knobs?

Yes without the eq it gets smaller sounding when you go very low just like most if not all attenuators I've tried but yes you can make it bigger with the depth and the bottom 3 way toggle is sort of like set depth settings I use the middle setting som e times to add a little beefiness but the 3rd all the way up position gets too much bass for my liking but you may like it. The top toggle is a 3 way bright/edge kind of thing. I leave it on the off or bottom position and use presence knob if I want brighter.

Cranking the gain all the way will give more gain but I don't like it much past 3 oclock when cranking the volume so high, bottom end gets flubby and just sounds too gained out on mine. Now if I was just setting the volume at 1 oclock or lower then yes gain cranked works but going higher with the volume is where the power tube overdrive kicks in that I like so well.

Yeah, I have noticed that on the flubbing out. So then you would just put a boost or od out front then add more that way! I have a Paul Gilbert Fuzz Universe Pedal that is great. The boost on it sounds amazing. 2203 by itself is usually not enough for me. I need some pedals!

How does a fully cranked Plexi sound with it? Do you throw all on 10 and let it rip?

Thats cool to hear! Thanks for the input. Yeah, I think the Power Station will be the way for me to go. I am sick of my hotplate. Most of the time I crank my amps up and have to deal with the ear bleeding levels. I just love that sweet sound of a cranked Marshall; be it a Plexi or 2203. Its all good!

Well I will let you guys know in a week or so. I just bought dirtycooter's. Can't wait to get it.

Good thing, because I seriously just blew up the damn Hotplate this weekend! haha It was already starting to go bad. Fan wasn't working right. Made a grinding sound. Well I plugged in my 2203 and crank that up for about 3 hrs. I started to smell something burning. Yep... the Hotplate finally lived up to its name! hahaha

Perfecting time to get the Power Station.

On another note....

I think this will make my amps sooo much easier to record. Problem that I have with all my clips that you guys have commented on is the fact that I run the Plexi wide open. I don't ever use a Hotplate or anything while I record. I just let it rip. So as you can imagine the balance in the recording can be kind of hard with that much volume. The SOLO/610 starts to clip like made, then I have to back off. I hate backing off on the mic pre. I run the gain on the 610 almost totally off. And to be honest, the 610 really shines when you can add some gain back in. Keeping the volume and gain at unity on the mic pre. Its sings! It has this organic thing that you rarely here these days. And most of the time I have to sacrifice that so that it won't clip.

Now with the Power Station, I can do some recordings and get the most out of my recording gear. This is really exciting. Expect to hear A LOT more clips from me. Time to get busy!
