Cabinet advice.....

Post by bvmjethead » Wed Feb 22, 2006 5:17 pm

I have an opportunity to purchase a Marshall Handwired 2061CX 2 x 12 cabinet for $650. It's mint. It's got the 70th anniversary Celestion G30H speakers in it.

How will that do for a main cabinet for my Metro JTM 45 clone?

Sorry for all the questions but I've only had Fender & Traynor combo amps untill coming here....

It would do the job...like Billy said, though, it IS a chunk of change. Maybe send an email to Jeff Swanson at Swanson Cabs and have him build you a cab...you could load it with whatever speakers you want...may be better and cheaper. Take my advice with a grain of salt though...I had actually been looking at swanson and avatar for my cab but I ended up buying a used mojave 2 x 12" with a G12H and Alnico Blue for $600...I justified it because the alnico blue is such an expensive speaker to begin with...this particular cab sells for $800 new, which to me is pretty outrageous but it's built like a tank. I'm probably having Jeff build my head cab when I get to it.

I have one. Did not like the speakers at all. Changed them out for a couple of early 70's G12M's I had. Much nicer.

George IS getting me a price on a Swanson 2 x 12 slant cabinet loaded with the Historic G12H "Made in England" speakers.....

I just thought that $650 on this Marshall was a good deal. But you're right I would have to change out those speakers and that just makes it a hassle....

Crap....

Those heritage are nice, but i don't know if i want to paya $100.. extra per speaker. I Love the G12H30's, and Daves helltones rule...just broke in G12H's You've looked at the avatar? Daves Premier Vintage 212 is $399 LOADED; if you upgrade to the Heritages it would be 599

In my humble opinion, Dave is the BEST for cabinets and speakers, blows his competion away! Now if you would only build a two twelve slant...SWEET There is a unload Mojotone 2x12 slant on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... %3AIT&rd=1

Or alternately you could just nick some drawings for a cab, buy two greenbacks, go get some 3/4" birch ply and tolex and away you go, for less than 300 bucks. I mean it stands to reason that if you can build an amp, the cab shouldn't be nearly as hard, or time consuming etc

Dude, check out these "Portcitymusic" auctions on the 'Bay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... _Stores_IT

No bids on a 2x12 unloaded that's the perfect width for a JTM45 head, load up your own preferred speakers and you're good to go!!

Is he reliable? I sent him a request for a quote weeks ago and he never even responded to my email.

Lot's of that going around in this industry. Cabinet makers and tube suppliers are by far the worst in my experience.

This is a hobby for me, I don't want to have to deal with delays and unanswered e-mails, I get that enough at work....

Jeff is very reliable. He's built cabs for quite a few friends of mine. Maybe, drop him a follow-up email or give him a call.

Regarding Avatar, best deal on the net as far as pricing goes (look at his premier vintage cab), his hellatones (broken in G12H) are great. I know many satisfied customers. That being said, you also might want to read this thread as quite a few people have recently been having problems with cabinet rattling.

You could also look into mojotone or reason amps for a 2 x 12 cab.

Yeah, that's why I said there are alot of folks satisfed with Avatar...but I didn't want it to be completely one-sided about it. Their premiere vintage cabs are killer looking and the price is amazing, especially with loaded speakers. Before the rattle thread came about, I was debating between the used Mojave or the Avatar...I just jumped on the Mojave.
