I hear ya Chief. I had a similar experience....went into a curve a little too fast and hit some loose gravel. You have some very nice bikes btw.

I'll tell ya... I'm sick to death of the "Big Twins or nuthin" bad-ass BS!

Look, I been ridin' for 34 years now. EVEN IF my left knee wasn't buggered from flat track accident I wouldn't ride a big twin, it's a Buell for me. YEAH, a Sportster in rice rocket clothing!

I've seen more guys stick their ol' ladies on some nasty old iron head 'cuz it's a "girlie bike", well, it's a girlie bike with NO HANDLING and NO BRAKES! You'll find that a Buell not only has a MOTOR, it has brakes! ANYWAY, the rest of the "girls on Sportsters" story reads that the ol' lady tries to keep up with the more experienced ol' man on his bad-ass big twin, he makes the corner, she doesn't. 'Course, helmet laws suck so she wasn't wearin' one or it was one of those Taiwan shorty buckets that are like nuthin' at all. He's got a bad-ass biker story now, he had a good ol' lady 'til she wrecked her sportster.

THEN there's the moron who bought the Heritage Soft Tail, heck, all it takes to be a "real" biker these days is the ability to write a check. Well, his Soft Tail is hangin' on the wall of a shop with a little over 60 miles on the clock, he never touched the front brake 'cuz he never used it on his bicycle whan he was a kid and anyway, that's why they don't put usable front brakes on their stuff, you wouldn't want someone to get hurt with "too much front brake"! ANYWAY, he had to take HIS ol' lady for a little putt on his shiny scooter, after all, with 60 miles under his belt he was a seasoned rider! SO when the box truck pulled out in front of 'im he never touched the front brake, the rotor is BRAND NEW (and BENT!), he hit the truck dead center of the rear wheels. The ejection seat went off and his ol' lady kissed the side of the truck pretty hard, hard enough that they couldn't have an open casket funeral. He lived, he's got another biker hero sob story.

SO brothers and sisters, you can talk the talk but do you walk the walk? You want to be a hero I'll see ya at the track, ANY track, dirt, pavement, 1/4 mile drags, 1/4 mile short track, hell, I'll even see ya at the hillclimbs! With over 25 bikes out in my garage I got one for every purpose. You can park yer Big Twin at a bar, you're gonna need something else to stay with me where I ride!

By the way ASSHOLE, no ONE in my club or I that I know takes ANY fuckin pride in getting hurt or getting somebody else hurt. Especially a wife, girlfriend, brother or sister. Your statements are so fuckin moronic I won't waste any more of my time.

Wow, I had no idea that this thread could be so controversial. Do I like my bike? Hell yes! It's a nice scooter. It's an '03 XL1200, carb jetted, Cycle Shack Slip ons, SE intake, and drag bars with 4" risers. The thing that gets me is that I never rag on anyone's bike. I figure that they're riding the bike that they wanted, else they wouldn't have bought it and I'm riding the bike that I wanted. Have I been ragged about my bike before? Yes, and it's always some jerk that rides a Jap bike that tries to come across as a "one percenter".

My first Sporty was an 883 that quickly became a 1200 (S&S, Dyna Comp, Andrews, Thunder Header, etc) with a 21" wheel, Fat Bob tanks, chopped rear fender,
slammed, 6" over etc. This was wayyy before HD even thought of the 1200 Custom. I used to laugh at the guys who gave me shit about riding my "girlfriends bike". I'd say 'Hey, it's all I can afford and it's NOT a rice burner!" It was great until I rode my bud's Softail Custom...

Eggzakly! Hey I want a bigger bike, but until I get my kids out of school, I can't swing it. I've got 3 kids in private school. I write a check each year that would put me on a new Road King. Until then, I'll ride my Sporty and enjoy it. When I do get a bigger bike, I'll keep the Sporty. It's great for running around town.

Take yer 113 inch H-D, crank it up as far as it will go on the front straight of Loudon, then grab a big handful of front brake and turn left. You ain't gonna make it, the floorboards are gonna ground out.

NOW before you start calling people nasty names, remember that there are plenty of guys out there who don't know any better tryin' to make a Big Twin do things it was never designed to do. Bad-asses like you. You'll get some dumb shit killed tryin' to be a tough guy like you are.

Wheelies are for school kids, you better get a trials bike if you want to learn to steer something on one wheel.

What would someone recommend for a first motorcycle? My bike experience is limited to a XR 125 about 17 years ago. Sold it for some guitar gear, never bought another. Now I'm getting an itch to get a 2 wheeled transport to work and back, and perhaps something nice to ride on the weekends.

I'm looking at fuel economy, lowered price tag, and something that will not have those with sticky fingers eyeing it.

Back in the "good ol'days" ya had tons o' choices among five or so different brands o' Jap scrap in any size from XXtra small to XXXtra large. The whole scene has gone to bigger bikes 'cuz the "mine is bigger than yours is" thing is EVERYWHERE.

The obvious choices these days would include the Buell Blast, the Kawasaki EX500 and the venerable Suzuki GS500.

The Suzuki is the least likely to get stolen of the bunch. It's an interesting story, it started out as the GS400 way back in '74, then it went 425, 450, then 500. It's a simple and rugged bike, good enough to keep the trucks from drivin' up yer pipes in traffic but not too much for someone who had a 200 pound dirt bike almost 20 years ago.

The EX is a baby Ninja. Guys buy 'em then beat 'em like a bigger Ninja, ratty ones can be found behind every dumpster! Watch for junk here.

Buell Blasts are everywhere these days, too. It's half a Sportster motor, roughly, in a compact chassis. Hate to say it but it's kind of a girlie bike, lotsa guys buy 'em for their ol' ladies. Least they got brakes!

You can buy these things for $1500 for a scruffy one, used, or $2500 for a nice one. The Buells go a bit higher. Buy used, let someone else pay retail!

Next deal, and this is the more advanced program. Wanna keep it from gettin' stolen? Buy and ugly one to begin with, then paint it flat black with a brush. The uninformed won't mess with it because it's ugly, those who know better won't touch some flat black rat bike!

Don't worry about busted plastic, strip that crap right off! The little Ninja looks like Alien meets Predator with its guts exposed.

My advice would be to take a rider safety course before you buy anything. Then buy something used that you like. Before venturing out on busy streets/highways, practice riding your new bike in parking lots and streets/roads that don't have a lot of traffic until you feel comfortable with it.
