Mine might be a bit different than these guys, it's a jtm 45 reissue and I just put in the ptp board and replaced the ouput and choke. I just blasted my mij tele with a Lollar vintage tele set of pickups, and it distorts quite nicely straight into the amp with a 2-12 bassman cab. I had to turn up a little louder than I do with humbuckers, but it sounded great. I could totally gig with that sound

Also remember to get some kind of load on a new amp like this and push it hard. The components just start to sound better and better the more you play it. My Germino was hardly played from what I can tell, now that I'm putting hours on it, I can feel the difference in the amp as it "matures." Now don't get me wrong, its not a total night and day thing, but very pleasant feeling to notice how well it plays as its broken in. the Sozo site says it can take new caps up to 100 hours of playing to form their ideal sound qualities.

Note as well, things like the quality of your cables, cable lengths, and anything you clutter the front of the amp with, will make a difference. I switched cables recently to using a longer cable, the sound got darker, and the top edge of the sound rounded out. I'm going to get some premium instrument and speaker wire to spoil my amp here in the near future. These circuits show all kinds of subtle detail.

Using my strat into my cranked Bluesbreaker (without pedals) I think a good tone/gain comparison is "Jesus Just Left Chicago" from ZZ Top's "Tres Hombres" album. I do have to pretty much crank it to get there, but it does deliver. What I typically do, however, is play it between 6-9 on the volume (where it is still breaking up, but still also fairly clean) and use a fuzz face clone to push it over the top. The straight strat into amp sound is good for an agressive cleanish sound plus with a twist of the guitar volume knob while the fuzz is on and I can go from "Wind Cries Mary" clean to "Foxy Lady" full on fuzz.

I use the thin george'l cables, they are a pretty good bang for the buck.

Great answer, and are you talking about the lead guitar right?
