I thought the GL sounded good because it was more detailed and preserved the treble response better. Listening to the EA, I now realize it put an artificial emphasis on treble and upper mids! All the harshness went away with the EA, to the point where I could almost turn up the treble on the amp even more!
Now I am curious what it could do on my pedalboard...but I am worried about the stiffness of the cable and the relative size of Neutrik plugs over the GLs...do you think it makes a big difference on a pedalboard?
Shakti,
I couldn't agree more on the EA-GL comparison! Don't hestitate to use the EA cable for your pedalboard either. Yes, it does make all the difference there too. Yes, they're stiff and yes, the Neutriks are big but oooooooooohhh that sound! I cut up an entire 20 ft EA cable into patch cables for my pedalboard which fits 8 pedals. DO IT!!!

Well, I did some comparisons when I was back home last week and...
...maybe I am imagining things, but I do think the GLs add harshness! I tried to eliminate all other factors, but of course this isn't a true A/B test. My problem is this: my board is completely cramped, and in some spots it will be hard to fit anything but the GL plugs. I can do it in most spots, but there are a few tricky ones. And either I do them all, or I won't bother. I am wondering how much I am going to appreciate the difference in a band setting (where I'd typically use the pedal boards). OTOH, as with all things GAS, once you get an idea into your head that something could be improved, it's hard to let go of it.
One question for you or anyone else (LavaMan?); what is the best plug to use with standard (non-GL) cable? If there is a good one that doesn't have the long sleeves, then that would help a lot. The problem isn't the thickness of the right angle plug, but the long, thick sleeves most of them have.

Sounds to me you haven't used Evidence Audio. Everyone I know that was wild about the George L's became a believer once they discovered EA.

Evidence Audio
Never heard of Evidence Audio, as you might know Australia sometimes gets these products once they have been in supply to your guys for 10+ years. We are fortunate to have the little that does comes in. But what makes them better?

Mogami Gold tip
I was completely floored when I tried the Mogami cables. I used a Mexi-Tele into a Marshall combo. I didn't want to hear great tone. I wanted to hear the difference between a generic cable compared to a Mogami cable. I had a friend with me so I know it was not just me. I played thru the amp with the generic cable. Then the Mogami. The tone was much better. The volume was higher. The difference was night and day. Now, how the Mogami compares to another high end cable, I don't know but I am VERY happy with the cables that I got even if they did cost $70.00 for two of them. BTW, the other guitar player in our band ended up buying the same cables!

I have been using Evidence Audio cables ( www.evidenceaudio.com ) for a couple of years now (four I beleive) I started out with the Lyric and I couldn't beleive the difference it made. I had tried several other "high end" cables, but I never liked any of them because they just seemed to change the sound, without improving it. Like one cable which really opened up the higher frequencies of the sound, but the same time it took away all the low end punch of the sound, which really I really didn't like (being a Les Paul/Marshall guy...)
But the EA Lyric didn't do that. It just improved the sound, meaning that it didn't add the ugly and unwanted distortions that most cables do. It was a bit changing from worn to fresh strings or tubes etc.
Then the EA Lyric HG came out. I couldn't resist trying one. And wow! Big improvement. Again, it didn't change the frequency response, it just made the sound better, like the difference a good setup makes on a previously poorly setup guitar.
Another thing which is often forgotten is the quality of the speaker cable and the internal wiring i 4x12s. Especially on new Marshall cabs which sound much better when they are rewired with properly soldered "real" speaker cable.

I've been using Whirlwind Cables for some time now. Work ok, but after a few years of wrapping them around my arm to pack them away, they have become noisy and it's time to change (hence me reading this thread)
