Why does it do that???

When I log into a particular forum, such as Off-Topic, a few of the little icons on the far left jiggle. Some are orange, which I've determined means that there's new schtuff there, but it seems that both white ones and colored ones jiggle. Is it just boredom, are the icons in need of some excitement?

Sometimes they need to move otherwise they get all cramped up.

"Hot topics" are animated -- I don't know if it has to hit the second page of discussion to be a hot topic?

Well, all of the animated icons are 2+ page topics, but not all 2+ page topics are animated.

Still dazed and confused.

I think it has to hit a certain amount of posts within a certain time frame to be a hot topic. At least this is how it is on a phpBB my wife runs.
