I totally lacked the expertise to make something like this viable, but way back in my post-college days I thought this was possible. A solar panel car-roof would provide the electricity necessary for electrolosis, and the exhaust would be collected as water and recycled. A back-up extension cord for charging up on cruddy days and you'd be in business.
I just can't imagine big oil, the big three auto-makers or the current government letting this loose on the world for the havoc it would unleash on the ecomomy/corporate bottom lines.
I'd buy one, though.
