Im gonna go that rout next time I think. Theres so many different mobos and chip set variants out there among other things. Its tough to sort through it. About the only thing people seem to agree on is that the Athlon 64 X2 is the best overall value in dual core CPUs right now even if not the top of the line

I like building PC's almost as much as building amps....but I can only afford one or the other, so I'm still on P4 machines in the mid-2Ghz range.

Which is more then Im running. I think my next 'build' is going to have to be a PC instead of an amp. :( Shit happens. Im still on a P4 1.5GHz. Ive worked with many other more up-to-date consumer PCs and I dont think they run that much better for 90% of everything thats not inense PC gamming or recording but I am about out of options for new hardware and driver updates. I only have the old AGP and PCI slots on the mobo and 1G of memory max

Dan, I build my own boxes as well but am in the same boat as Flames. You might want to check out some of the gear shootouts at tomshardware.com as a start then move on from there. I replaced an asus P4PE with an Intel board in my main machine last year and it's running nicely...2.5Ghz, one 120GB Western Digital HD (with another sitting under my desk waiting to be installed), 1GB of Corsair RAM, MSI 4200TI 128MB vid card soft-quadroed...mobo has onboard sound, LAN, firewire, many USB ports...dropped in my old 20-bit echoaudio Gina card with breakoutbox...doing all my web dev, 3D, graphic, vid, and pro audio work (nuendo 2 and Logic 5) and it runs without a hiccup.

Haven't gone the Athlon route, yet, but if you need some help sourcing parts, I'd suggest newegg for the mobo and other internals...Directron has great case options. This is the one I have:

Loads of bays, 5 fans...grat case and easy to maintain.

The funny thing about newegg is the reviews are so good. Theres so many products and reviews and you find a component that has 80 reviews and 5 stars and the reviews are all standard glowing reviews not so much info unless you spend an hour reading. Then the ones that really have the info are the 6 negative or nutral reviews that have you thinkin the things worthless by the end. Its tough to sort out. Ill check out the tomshardware shootouts as well. I think Im set on an Athlon Dual Core, Corsair RAM, and the PSU. The things Im still unsure about is the mobo and graphics card. Probably because their the most gamming intense components that people buy but not everyone plays Doom 3 and all this gamming shit.
