THE HW Marshall thread. Tweaking it step by step.

Hi guys, I am a newbie to this forum, at least posting. Let me say how unbelievable this forum and Metroamp are!
I happen to be the owner of the HW that started this thread... Please note...THERE IS HOPE. Simply send your HW to George, tell him what you are looking for tonally, and consider it done. Better yet, knowing now, get a 12,000, or other MetroClone and avoid the whole process. LOL.
I told George up front, I know very little if anything about amp electronics and tonal adjustments. I simply asked for his 12k/EVH like sound amap, he made suggestions and recommendations (as well as input from this thread), I decided what I could afford and did it. Long story short, $2,100 for the amp slightly used and about $500 for modifications, including tubes, caps, etc.. and Dagnall clone OT. Still less $$ than new(crap), but a little more than one of George's amps. Again, if I knew then what I know now, we'd have gone that route. The only change I've made since was putting in EH Big Bottles out of curiosity, and improved it even more. The best way to describe the sound now is VHII, or pretty damn close. I personally don't play alot of actual VH but am addicted to the old tone/THE TONE if you will. EVERYONE who hears this amp is blown away by it, and most scratch their head when I tell them its not a Marshall, regardless of the undeserving logo on the front. Jealous they are, and exremely happy am I. I play through a band members Greenback cab, but will certainly purchase my own custom through Metro later this year. Again, I can not say enough about the work done on this amp and am willing to help/convince anyone interested in how to improve the HW they may be "stuck" with willingly or not. Also, I'm excited to have found Metroamp and everyone on this forum. Thankyou!!

I agree with you on that............ Tommy Bolin was an amazing player. There aren't a lot of people around any more who really appreciate what he could do.

Y ngwie, YOu mentioned background noise on your original 1959HW and now with the newest one youve recieved am I to understand the same background hiss/noise is going on. What atre the odds of that? Or was it 3 1959HW amps youve had gone back and forth and the humm issue/ I might say it is not the amp perhaps? Maybe im not clicking on all 8 with your posts or missing something here but have you checked your axes wiring ? Do you run outboard boosting into your head? Just curious how youve arrived at this again and again.

A friend of mine just picked up a super clean 1977 Superlead 100 watt Marshaoll with svets, 2 original Dalys, four LCR and all original caps etc. Of course the caps are the green chicklet looking types. We plugged this 77' superlead in with both our favorite device that being the Hot British and once again tone city. The amp was alive warm and meaty running Vol I on 3/4 and Volume II on like 2 or so for the mix. All EQing round 6 or so. Then it was my 1959HW's turn with the Bone. The basic Marshall tone was there HOWEVER that "Thunk" you get was not. As well the amp just did not sound very musical as has been stated previous in this thread. Im just dissapointed again . He pays $900 bucks for his 77' super and im frowning.

Anyway, Its a good thing George is around to remedy the situation. On a good side note, I bought a VIsual Sound H2) Delay-CHorus p[edal with bucket brigade chips thru my store and I must admit the delay was super warm and ambient. THe pedal is obviously made for NMV type amps. Master volume amps dont take well to this pedal at all. Just to much in the mix and not natuarl. NMV amps however , excellent and a nice price on this pedal.

As for the 1959HW Ive been debating daily as I save monies for the revamping or just dumping the 4dang blasted thing and buying a metro 12000xxx

YOu mentioned the fact that the preamp tube cover "popped off" and rattled around inside the amp. Happened to me to! Funny one! Anyway, I teach guitar and sell gear at a music store in FLA and would be willing to get you a Tonebone Hot British at my cost. I can find out for you. It would be like $100 give or take a few bucks. If interested PM me.

Also The power issue in your home you mentioned may have something to do with the 1959HW as far as it giving up some hum? When you mentioned dialing in your EMG equip. Git fiddle that brought some of the hum down to an excepted level which was encouraging.

I replaced my V1 psotion 12ax7 Stock Marshall logo'ed "JJ tub"e with a NOS Sylvania 12AX7A. Clean sounding and no hum in the V1. Got it from DOugstubes.com. Good guy and cqarries few NOS pieces. Try using that tube for V`1 or a sim8iliar piece w/ low microphonics

I also use a Power Regulator and conditioner by FURMAN

I just edited when I woke up and then saw you comment on the Power conditioning pieces. GOod call. I use the FUrman Power Regulator and conditioner. DIfferant than a normal conditioner type in that it will actually keep the voltage at 120 . Ive seen place with 125 which is ok but its when its low I think anywayt that can be an issue. THe Furman Power Regulator. AGAIN, I can get this through my store and save you some float. Let me know. GOod luck with the amp.

I recently got in touch with my old friend amp tech Paul Hammond,he stated that as far as he knew,Eric Bazilian of Hooters fame ,still posseses my old JTM Superbass.
I emailed his management company today,and hope to hear back about the fate of the old Black Flag head.
Flames,will send the Black Rose cd next week,have my car in the shop until Monday,to get to post office, ect.
According to Paul Hammond he cloned my JTM Suoerbass and is one of his main stage heads!

Not a problem on the TOnebone Hot British just let me know when your ready and ill take care of you on it. We also just got in a few T Rex pedals too. We got the Replica delay pedal which is really nice and i would of bought it however I already have an H2O I really like that has delay and chorus. It has the bucket brigade chips for the chorus in it and the delay sounds very lush for NMV type Marshalls. Didnt dig it on MV types though. Its almost as if they new it would be for NMV type amps? strange.

The T Rex we got a 30 day PO order on so we can check them out and if they sell then well keep the line and if not then..well you know the end of that one! I personally love the T Rex stuff. I took all four pedals home and dialed them all in with both of my 81 JCM800 and my 1959HW and they responded differnatly to each obviously . The Boost pedal I was very impressed with especially with my 81 JCM800. I have been using my Analogman TS9 Borwn mod pedal with vintage JRC4558 chip which sounds good. Was using the Klon for a long time but have switched recently over to the brown mod Analogman TS9. Gonna have it Silver modded which takes the mid hump out and gives the pedal more fidelity and over all warmth. A friend has two of them and they are the best sounding pedals for a JCM800 IMHO. I was really a KLON Freak for a long time til the SIlver mod TS9 was put in front of me for a bit! :>) Anyway, Let me know on the Tonebone and its yours for what we talked about.:>)

I missed that post I guess...... How does the digitally remastered sound? Probably the remaster.........unless they did a remaster job like some of ZZ Top's stuff got a while back with replaced drum sounds and crap.

On that DVD, it wasn't even that he didn't sound great with the DSL's (I'm sure Gary has no trouble sounding great through a Peavey though) but the rawness when he nails a note hard just wasn't there; too slick, you know? And surely his tech hates taking care of them!!
