Attenuator Opinions Needed! Weber Mass, mini mas versus THD.

Post by harddriver » Fri Sep 08, 2006 5:53 pm

Hey guys I just wanted to ask to see if any of you have had experience with Weber attenuators? I used to use a THD hotplate a few years ago to slave a 100 watt marshall dimed. While it did sound good I did eventually smoke the power transformer in the amp. It was the original transformers and they were probably weak from years if abuse but that is what happened. I though the Weber was interesting because of the speaker motor coil used.

The Ultimate does not seem to be good for peoples amps from what I have read.

I have a 1972 50 watt superlead I want to crank up through this which is why I am asking. I also have an 8 watt single ended Class A EL-34 with a cathode follower plexi tonestack that I built and would like to attneuate some, yeah 8 watts is still loud cranked!

Just seeing what the current opinions are.

thanks!
Mark

Whats your take on the SUper Ultimate Attenautor ? Im thinking hard on getting one. Wanna run her through my 77 MKII superlead and 78 blackback G12M25 cab.

I just wonder if after the attenuation is set in place do you get all the gain you need for performance or are people running a DOD250 grey kicked in a tad along with the UA or SUA or whatever?? or ANY pedal for that matter. I hear the Metroamp 12000 series amp with its mighty EVH tones and im not sure whether hes running an Attenuator with a stock amp or kicking the gain with a pedal AND the attenuation. A qyuestion for george perhaps then. anyway let me know if possible

i love my sua, it just sounds a little more true at the bedroom volumes that i have to use. i rarely get to take these amps out & crank them these days. (kind of a shame, trying to remedy this) at bedroom volume, yes i do find myself using a preamp usually to kind of simulate what a room full of volume would respond like, but then again i like quite a bit of gain.
