Hot British vs. Grey DOD250 vs. attenuation vs. STOCK vs. ??

Post by daneswede » Thu Aug 17, 2006 8:08 am

So which his your flavor. YOu like using an overdrive in front of your Metroamp, MOJAVE or Marshall NMV type superlead , jmp, jtm45 or other NMV type amp? You like running stock and diming her (if you can then your lucky for the ears will bleed!), for that all natur'ale' tone. Or perhaps using the ever popular TOnebone Hot British, Bk Butler or Plexitube 12AX7 pedals. Maybe just a bit of clean boost. A fuzz face or FUzz Facotry ZVEX is a thicvk one if you can tame the gain!

So many choices for your amp and which to go with for the everlasting sonic ! For me and as of late i have been using my trusty TOnebone Hot British wanting to get the plexitube as well just to dial in one more channel of tone. It does lenmd itself for some "coloration" on your amp. But what a beautiful sound it is. Its as if the guys at Radial Engineering knew exactly what amp type they were going for with this puppy. It is a cross breed I am told of true tube path and diode clipping. I feel IMHO it is above the BK Butler stuff and other similiar types due to its lack of "woofiness" i found with the BK . The BK is a good pedal bnut ya gotta dial some eqing out which i tend to not care for. THe Hot British I run STRICTLY untiy across the board or OFF/FLAT OUT . Meaning that the mid bump and the bottom end switch are OFF. THe EQ treble mid and low are all UNITY or straight upo 12 oclock essentially taking them OUT of the cirucit as well. THe best way to run the HOt British iMHO is to simply to use the GAIN and LEVEL ONLY !and not opt to run the EQIng. Let your amp guide you to the force !

Of course I now am gearing up to get the ANalogman DOD250 Grey mod pedal which apparently has 50% more gain on tap then its post DOD250 bretherean. Also getting the FUZZ FACTORY which I really liked through a SUperlead reissue one day at SamAsh just noodling with a bud of mine who had one with the theramin plate with it. DIdnt like the plate as much as I did the pedal straight on. after you stop playing though there is the noise you must spuelch or GATE which the pedal does have.

Then there is the whole Treble boodter market which is a whole nother story to look into for me.

THen of course we come to the MAIN dialing in devices as I like to call them. THE ATTENUATORS ! THE Ultimate which in the above thread of this is what im about to dial in and buy looks to be the "ULTIMATE" ticket seeing how your pushing your amps natural tone to its limit and kicking the volume back to acceptable stage volume or even lower v.'s! I am green with an Attenuator so if your looking for info on them check the other threads. ust wanteed to rant on this subject for moment. tx

EDIT: Wanted to add that a good friend of mine just bought a near mint 1969 Super Bass Marshall 100 watter and runs her with a 78' Blackback G12M25 cslant rola cab with the later JCM type black transparent cloth.

ANyway HE is using TWO slant cabs and rolling at 8 ohms for some added resonance. Very nice tone . Seems to even SMOOTH the curve a lot more and spread your sonic out across the lawn so to speak. The "Hair" around the notes become twice as fast for pick attack as you barely strick a note it rings with utter clarity and demands perfection from its player ! Incredible! OF cousrse the 69' Superbass Plexi helped his tone as well as the 2 cabs  8)

WOW
I ran into something EXTRA ORDINARY this past few weeks. I will admit my "always searching for the "IT TONE" buddy once again has ran this pedal up the flag pole and i for one am saluting it!

It is none other than the MARSHALL SHREDMASTER. Ok, Right off the bat im here to say if you are thinking it is a metal zone too much gain shredhead device think again! It is very natural sounding and lets your amp do the talking this time adding IMHO less of its own coloration compared to the TONEBONE H.B. These pedals can be had for $200 in clean condition. Their is a first and second run but i think they are exactly the same circuit wise. I will simply say this about the pedal. Ive been running it without jumping channels and with and weither way it shines ! The pedal is SO ORGANIC to me it simply gives you a super smooth ultra fast picking inspirational great british tone in a box. Was made for 2 yrs and I cant for the life of me figure why??

A MUST TRY!

I recently picked up one of the (very similar I believe) Marshall DriveMaster older black stomps for under $100 and can't say enough good things about it!!!!

Definitely blows both the DS-1 and all of the Tube Screamers I've heard out of the water.....

Did end up replacing the stock switch with a Carling. The old switch was PCB mounted  so not only is the switch much better, but extended the life of the stomp itself quite a bit by doiing a chassis mount.
Let's get going, 'cause there's too much music, too little time!!!!

I do love my shredmaster! Here is how I am running my set up these days. I use either a 50 watt PCB into my 4X12 25m BB cab for a cleaner, Rush type sound, adding the H20 chorus and delay, and run the dry out into a Marshall JCM 800 4010 w/ 75 celestion. I am getting that spread, dual mono sound, the JCM seems to add some brittle to the smooth NMV sound. I notice a big difference when I switch the 50 watt JMP for my 100 watt plexi or 100 watt '72. the hundred watt adds a big, full, saturated sound to the mix.

I am torn between getting that Rush, cleanness with the EVH drive of the 100watters. I do like running the shredmaster into the JCM 800. I just kick back the preamp on the JCM, and run the shredmaster with the gain on 9ish....best tone sofar!!! :D

Hi, In regards to the DOD 250, I would only get it ( Mojo modded of course with proper chip) if you use a strat. It can smooth out a humbucker a bit too much as well as give it a bit too much bottom end. Yngwie really struck a good combination with his amp, guitar and DOD overdrive 250. Yngwie was sort of the final word on that whole European Marshall and Strat sound (Blackmore,Roth) I do not think Malmsteen is using what they are calling his signature DOD pedal. He probably has the correct circuit in those new boxes.

ToneSlinger,you are correct sir!
Yngwie has never used the DOD YJM308 pedal on stage or on his recordings. He continues to use a conjunction of the grey 250 pedals, and some say a TS-08,or DS-1 at low gain settings with his NS-2 last in line.
Finally a topic I can post about,as I am on the lunatic fringe of Malmsteen fans. The whole YJM308 pedal was an attempt by Digitech to sell more pedals, surprise, and the stock pedal,is no good with out the 741 mod,Analogman being the best modifier out their for my two cents.
Yngwie gets great sustain at low studio volumes,ie;instructional or demonstration videos. This is somewhat tricky to obtain with just one DOD205 or the modded YJM pedal.
There was recently a flurry of activity on the Malmsteen forums, which can be somewhat lame I will admit, people don't post for weeks!
The speculation was that Yngwie uses two 250 pedals in series, with the NS-2 last in line, sometimes live ,he uses two NS-2's.
The combination of boosted front end, power tube distortion, and the stacked DiMarzio's is key to the Malmsteen tone.A lot of people say they get that tone with their amp modelers or multieffects units, but not really.
Yngwie's guitars are more deeply scalloped than the signature models, and he plays with insanely high action, and .008 to .048 Dean Markley Yngwie Magic strings. The clarity of the notes and the definition,is the key to obtaining his tone,is his fingers, which is no small contribution.
I have heard Yngwie play non-scalloped guitars, and he sound exactly the same,so he has an incredible ability to adapt his playing style.

I definatley agree. Yngwie is a complete master of guitar ! I was amazed a few months back to experience his live show in the flesh. He played at a technical level that I have never witnessed before, and got the sweetest tone. I have the live "Marching out" concert from I think January '85 in Japan. It shows at the end some footage of his guitars and pedal board. I see that he had the first edition grey 250 and a second edition yellow one on his board(I think analog Mike said that some of the early yellow ones had the correct chip, I think ?) Maybe he at times had them both on or one was a back up ? Not only was I impressed with the playing but the showmanship was also the best. He was wet with sweat by the second song ,but never got tired or stopped jumping around. I was thinking that he had to get some sleep and drive 120 miles or so on a bus to Ashville N.C and do it again the following night. I then realized how truly awesome he is. He gave everything he had at that show(Charlotte), as I'm sure he does at all of them. Then as we were leaving there was already a crowd of people with thier guitars waiting outside his bus and I was thinking " Wow he ain't gonna get no sleep".

I don't want to stray off topic too much, but I must include my review of Yngwie's 2005 show in Tucson,Az.I met him before the show,a small bar/venue,behind outside the rear stage door,my buddy snapped a camera phone picture just after he signed my concert poster.
Nobody had a pen,and Yngwie hung around while we frantically looked for one.I wish I had listened to my wife who said to bring my guitar,I would have had it signed!Next time,as I know we will meet again.Shaking his hand was definitely a big highlight for me!This is from my concert review on 100% Malmsteen,a fan site:
City Limits - Tucson, Arizona 11/7/2005

(Concert Review and Photos from Dave Talkin)

I saw Yngwie for the first time in Tucson at the City Limits Nov 7th show of the Unleash The Fury tour. I had thought of bringing my 2005 Malmsteen Strat to get autographed, but did not want to risk damaging it at this 'general admission' show. My work buddy and I traveled from Phoenix to Tucson for the show. I was so excited for weeks prior to the event. We traveled to Tucson early in the morning, went to a local record store and scored a free event poster which the clerk gave me. He didn't know who he was.

We arrived at the gig around 2pm. I drove behind this small bar type venue to hope to see a tour bus, etc. And there was Yngwie's tour bus with a luggage trailer behind. April was walking around talking on her cell phone. Antonio was there with his mom and out a back door strolls the great maestro himself dressed in all black. I walked right up and introduced myself, shook hands with him and told him we drove down to Tucson from Phoenix and could I have an autograph. "Sure" he replied. Meanwhile some sort of effect pedal had arrived from FedEx and Yngwie was talking in Swedish to Thomas Nordegg his guitar tech who used to work with Steve Vai. More about him later. Anyway, bottom line is I could not find a pen anywhere. No one had a pen; I was freaking out! I am a critical care nurse and don't usually get nervous, but I had had a double shot cappuccino prior to arriving and I was embarrassed to meet my hero and looking like an idiot. Yngwie is so totally cool though. He was very gracious and waited around while I ran into the venue through the stage back door and asked to borrow a pen that was on the soundboard. I brought the poster to Yngwie and he signed it. My friend Virgil snapped a shot with his camera phone.

Yngwie went back inside and we listened to the sound check which was amazing. He played Cherokee Warrior, which they did not do later that evening. We walked around the front of the bar and could see through the glass the band playing from the right side. As we sat on the front steps, Yngwie and road crew came walking around the corner and through the front door. He said "Hello guys" to us recognizing me from before. I could not believe it. I had no camera yet! So I took my place in line the first at the door around 3pm. I waited there until the doors opened at approximately 7:15pm. It seemed like forever. We met lots of fans and it was an ordeal but well worth it. By now, I had secured a camera from the Circle K "western convenience store" across the street.

As soon as the the door opened, I ran to stage left in front of the guitar vocal mike so I would be virtually 2 feet away from Yngwie during the show. As people piled in Orange Sky played an okay set. I could see their set list on the stage and was counting down the songs until the end! Yngwie did not come out for at least an hour post the support group. Meanwhile, I was being trampled by these college kids who did not know who Yngwie really was. I was being crushed up against the steel barriers, but held my ground. There appeared to be "technical difficulties" holding up the start of the show. I could see Thomas tuning up various guitars like Yngwie's number 1 and number 2. Also, there must have been an early 1970's maple fingerboard Strat.

The band started with Rising Force, and the crowd went wild. Now, there was smoking allowed and being a non-smoker I was choking as well as screaming out with everyone else. I could not really hear the whole band mix as I was so close to the stage sort of in front of the PA. I could hear Doogie White and Yngwie, along with some stage drum sounds and no bass! It didn't matter as I had pretty much the best location in the house, which I had earned! I had this lunatic behind me who wanted to climb on stage. I kept shoving him back, also this stupid girl on my left kept trying to get a pick and kept shoving herself and her arm in my face as I tried to watch the show. She was causing such a nuisance and tried to grab Yngwie's dream catcher on the mike stand. He had to announce "don't touch that little girl", but he was very gracious and handed her a pick later. She still carried on in this frenzy through the whole show. When a 'pick attack' as I call it happened, a sea of arms would appear and you would be bludgeoned on the head and body as people violently grabbed for the flying white Jim Dunlop's. I eventually got one as the show ended by crawling under the stage barrier and reaching my arm a long way to carefully grab it!

Yngwie would have various guitar problems and would shout at Thomas every so often. He would start a solo and his signal would go dead, etc. Then prior to Black Star's Ovation Viper intro, the MXR Dynacomp was clearly unplugged. We were yelling at Thomas that it's unplugged. Then during the Black Star solo we all looked at our watches when Yngwie holds that long sustained note - hilarious!

I had to wear earplugs due to long past exposure to Marshall stacks since I was a boy in England at 16 years old with a 100 watt Superlead Plexi stack in my bedroom, a Fuzzface, Crybaby Wah, and my transition logo 1965 sunburst Strat. This was in 1968. I had done well for years but 15 years ago I suffered terrible tinnitus which is always with me, always with you as Joe Satriani says.

I digress with this long winded commentary, but I was really impressed with how much Yngwie really cares about his sound, fans, and is still all these years later at the top of his game - this smokeless sober Yngwie. He inspires me, but if I could be such a musical genius as him I would be self confident too! I clandestinely snapped some photos with the disposable camera which I snuck in. I will try to get scans of these and send them to you. Your Yngwie Malmsteen 100% website is great so keep up the great work.
I have more to tell about that amazing day,but check out the official Yngwie website for all my concert pictures:

Will try that stoo, but unfortunately with Malmsteen there are two speeds, full shred and off!
But we like that about him, black and white,no grey areas. :) :)
