5 piece neck?? I've never seen that!! Now I know the headstocks have been joined with 2 extra pieces to extend it for the uners, but I've never seen a 5 piece neck. Is this what you're talking about?NY Chief wrote: My '71 sunburst custom has a 5 piece neck, volute, pancake body and 3 piece top (that you can clearly see under the finish)

I had a 79 LP custom w/ the neck volute. It took a little getting used to when playing low on the neck. I don't think it did all that much structurally, that area is a weak spot with or without it. The volute is standard fare on gibson banjos and I guess they thought they would try it on guitars. I say look around and find one you like w/ or w/o the volute. Also, the 70's LP's seem to be quite heavier than most. I've also found mahogany neck LP's to sound much better than the maple necks. They made both in late 70's early 80's. Good luck!

Too bad I can't just trade one of my 12000s for one like this.
I like the pickup selection.,

I haven't thought much about lately. I have to take a look. I know there are definitley "winglets" tacked on to the side to extend the wood for the the tuners. It may be 3 pc. I don't recall.77custom wrote:5 piece neck?? I've never seen that!! Now I know the headstocks have been joined with 2 extra pieces to extend it for the uners, but I've never seen a 5 piece neck. I would look to the CS Les Pauls, if you can. You hear a lot about long tenon and such- it may make a difference, may not. I do not know. I just know that played side-by-side, (and like Fenders), I could notice a difference between the CS and regular.
They do have problems though. I have found, almost consistently, that the CS Fenders are much better set up than Gibbys. Kind of embarrassing for the $$$ Gib charges, but that is the case. I would EXPECT to have to have it set up, and have a bone nut installed.
Kind of like the HW Marshalls, really- needs to be tweaked, but when they are, they are incredible guitars. I would look to R/S Guitarworks for their replacement pots. Their Caps are fine, too, but if you can or have them, Black Beauties or Bumble Bees are the way to go.
R/S also has a fairly new Pup they designed, the 1960 RS/Fralin. Short of the acclaimed Timbuckers, these are mighty fine Pups.
Since I am so busy spending your money, I mght as well advice you to Pop for a Pigtail stop bar. Pricey, but again, just helps get close to "that sound."
There are others that also have to have accurate plastic. I am not one of those. Since it does not really effect tone, I have passed; YMMV.
All of these are refinements, you can get to them over time. But they all add up, like adding Sozos, a new tranny, etc to a Marshall HW. But in the end, you get the ton of the Gods!
I have a beautify R0 2002. Has quite a history. Ed Wilson pulled the wood for this one personally, I have been told.

Good Luck. Best advice, play a LOT of them, and wait until one speaks to you. Do NOT force it, you have many years to find her!

Go for used custom shop stuff, it will hold its value and probably wont have Q.C. issues. But with Gibson who knows.
I used to have 2 customs one was a 83' and a 82' I bought both for about 1200.00 a peice.Very nice but I tried a custom shop historic and it blew these two old wood guitars away,in fit and finish and the tone was heaven. Not to mention the old ones were heavy as heck. The 83 weighed in at 11lbs!!! and the 82 was 10lbs.The custims shop stuff I have now are all under or around 9lbs.That means alot if your playing 2 -2hour sets.
Hope this helps.

I have permanant shoulder damage from a 12lb mid seventies LP Custom !
Used to practice 4 hours a day when I started...standing up most of the time. It played like butter and sounded like a million bucks.
Now, when I wear a two strap backpack my left should starts to hurt after a 1/2 hour. The other shoulder is fine.
Sacrifices........?
Another reason why I would never own a Fender Twin JBL loaded.... it sounds great but WTF
