Check out this thread on the Marshall Amp Forum - http://www.marshallampforum.com/forum/v ... =4446#4446.

You brought more to the table in that argument than anyone else did. I tend to agree with you as well. One thing that I laughed at was when that one guy was talking about a straight pine vs. plywood cabinet. Well there are several grades/makes of plywood.... Was he talking about wood plank making a cabinet and then using home depot grade plywood to make same cabinet? I could then see his argument becaue they are both made out of pine. It is only when you get into the imported(here in the US) plywoods, ala 18mm Baltic ply (the voidless marine grade plywood that Marshall and others use) is where you will get a difference in the tone. Even if you were to use the US made cabinet grade maple, birch, oak plywood you are still using all pine except for the final laminate on the sheet. That one layer is not enough to make a real difference in tone.

The argument regarding different caps not being any difference is total bullshit. Change out those god aweful white legos that Marshall uses with Sozo's after the burn in period its 100% different.

Different tranny's make a difference Im sure. I have not changed mine out yet as I sort of like the JCM800 stock tranny in my JCM800 SL.

Seems that this guy had his opinion where he liked tone lounges ideas and was more defending that site he likes than anything. Similar in fashion to what posters here would say in George's defense if someone was talking ill of Metropolous Amplification.

It's not really the brand or shape that is the problem when it comes to capacitors ..it's the type, voltage rating and where it's placed in the amp. Some types (metallized poly)belong in a preamp where tone shaping and frequency are more important and other types( paper) belong in the poweramp where oomph, warmth and smoothness are required.

Of course what might make an amp unique is one that's ass backwards.Best thing to do is experiment....

rjgtr,

I agree with your arguments in that thread 100% and I think those who let test equipment and the like be the FINAL judge of good or bad tone for them are wasting one of the best test instruments ever made, that being the human ear. A well calibrated ear beats all IMO.

As you said, " don't discount the Master Builder"

A piece of equipment doesnt have a brain. A lot of techs suffer from too much knowledge and not enough sense. Ive seen it all the time while I was a Physics student at Temple. Your so numeral minded that you dont realize thats only one part to the story. The natural physical world is far too complex to ever explain the difference between 2 'objects' as a function of one or 2 measured values. Or even 10 for that matter.

Exactly!!!

They have been trying to tap into the workings of the human brain for decades and will admit that they have only scratched the surface.

I think it's amazing that you can sit in front of a amp and pick out multiple subtleties at once and then "home in" on any one. I don't know...it's powerful stuff to me.
