PC tech question

Post by Necrovore » Tue Jan 25, 2005 11:40 pm

This regards outlook express. First off Please don't tell me to change email programs cause I am not going to. Now here is the problem.

Couple of weeks ago I installed this latest security patch from MS and all of a sudden I can only send and receive emails one time per bootup.

I can still open OE and root through all the folder etc... Just not send or receive but once. If I hit the send/receive icon the window will flash like it were acting normal but only stay up for like 1 second or so, not nearly long enough to connect to any of my email servers. I have sent test emails to myself using my ISP's webmail so I know that there are messages on the server but OE wont connect after using it once.

I am at a complete loss on this one as even posting on the MS messageboard gets no response. I figured some of you guys are pc techs in their job and would know a work around for this.

All the account info using the tools/properties is good and I have re entered the info several times just to be sure.

I am running Win ME and dont want to hear the blah blah blah upgrade crap either unless you are willing to buy me XP pro.

Thanks in advance for any help regarding this matter.

Bjorn

So can you go to "Add/Remove Programs" in Win ME to remove security patches like you can under XP? Sounds like that patch is a dud. (Microsoft? Release a dud? NEVER!)

1) Turn off your firewall and try "send and receive" see if it works!!!!

2) Flush your account in Outlook reboot PC then re-open account

3) Try incredimail ( www.incredimail.com free version.......) and see if you can make it with this one

if 1 and 2 won't help your fucked unless you find in the registery the patch you install or what ever it is you did and delete it but than you might create more problem. Win ME sucks the most of all Wx ops system I know bla bla, your last chance would be to ask Billy a patch for that pach or formate you HD again good luck.................incredimail is the same as outlook it should work fine don't waste time with Me

system restore

Post by McGoogle McDougal » Wed Jan 26, 2005 12:40 am

Another possibility, since you're on Windows ME is to try using the "System Restore" utility (I'm pretty sure they first added this on ME). This utility allows you to restore the system state to specific restore points. Provided it hasn't been turned off, there may be a restore point you can choose that is recent but prior to downloading teh update from Microsoft.

I agree with Necrovore, however, that if there is an uninstall option for this update available in your "Add/Remove Program" then this is the first place to start.

Beyond that I'd start checking the Microsoft Knowledge Base and hitting Google about it. Unfortunately, although I do IT work, I only work with Outlook for email clients. Outlook Express is actually a completely different architecture than Outlook and is really aimed at the home user.

Good luck!

Actually, Windows ME does have System Restore... Here's a link to the Microsoft Knowledge Base article detailing it:

Ok here how it goes..........Wx ME does not come with system restore but you can add it with a Microsoft patch after the installation of ME, now for NEC it is to late unless he did installed it at the begenning.

My copy of WinME has System Restore straight off the disc, and it was a pre-release disc......did that change at some point in WinME's short infamous lifespan?

Well pass some here then Eddie. Me has system restore. I don't use it at all because that is the number on place that trojans and adware stick themselves. I think what I am going to do later this week is back up my address book and pertinant emails then uninstall OE and reinstall it. See if that works.

system restore tip

Post by McGoogle McDougal » Fri Jan 28, 2005 2:58 am

There isn't a need to leave System Restore on all the time to still make use of it. You can leave System Restore disabled for general use, but just prior to installing anything major (like Microsoft updates etc), enable it and manually make a restore point. Disable it again afterward, but this way you can always get back to where you were when you started...
