rgalpin wrote:interesting how the backing chords you used from mode to mode fall into a descending pattern:

Ionian - 5 4
Dorian - 4 3
Phryg - 3 2
Lyd - 2 1
Mix - 1 7
Aeo - 7 6
Loc - 6 5 (b5  )
did you do that on purpose? is there a reason why you chose those chords?
very close dude. the purpose here was to have all the modes starting from A. so yes itw as all on purpose.
you can really hear all of the mode flavors from that one note compared to playing them in one key so to speak.
i see all the modes as alterations of Ionian.

playing A ionian - I IV V in a is a, d, e so i used e/a and d/a for progression.

A dorian is the second mode of g major so i used the IV and V of g major over the A bass note c/a and d/a

a phrygian is the 3rd mode of f major - so IV and V are Bb and C so Bb/A and C/A

etc.

ya get it?

so i want to do A mixolydian - a mixolydian is the 5th mode of D major - the IV and V of D major is G and A - so G/A and A/A was used.

every chord progression was using major triads over an A bass note. triad/over bass note - e triad over a bass note is = E/A

got it. that is great insight. awesome.

so if i wanted to play phrygian in E -
phrygian E is the 3rd mode of C so, F and G triads (IV and V of C) are a good starting point. good shat!

and like you said - keeping the root of the key in the bass helps maintain home base.

dag bro - you opened up a door for me - i appreciate it - i've never known how to formulate PLEASING chord progressions in all the modes. i knew the theory that would allow me to play chords that were technically accurate but they didn't have any feel to them - this technique helps a lot.

i might just have to post a clip in the new CLIPS forum.

expanding on this simple formula - will increase my vocab - no doubt!

Mark,

Could you suggest any reading material that follows your methods of thought that you described here ??? I gotta Admitt that after 20 years of wasting time on the guitar, that after reading this thread, I'm actually forcing myself to learn the 7 major scale patterns.
I just recently got into my first band and I have been practicing alot more than I ever did and I'm getting sick of listening to my own repetative, out of key, boring, second position pentatonic crap.

i'll keep you posted!

taken off! yes!!

i was late to work this morning because i was noodling around in Lydian Land! love that stuff man. mark's examples are so nicely done that they are inspiring - that little melody that starts off the Ionian clip - DAG!! man did you just pull that out of the air?

i noticed the mixolydian was a nod toward Beck's, Lead Boots.

did that Ionian one come from somewhere like that or is that just off the cuff?
