Successful Build, Now there's a problem..

Post by noland0 » Wed Jan 12, 2011 12:48 am

Quite a Big one. :(

All was good about 2 weeks ago. I finished building the kit and instantly loved it!
Was a tad loud so installed the larmar. That all worked good. Then two days later the HT Fuse blew.
Here's the story:
First: I installed a new HT fuse, and when i flicked standby to on it blew again, audible hum coming from a transformer as well. I check everything AND REALISED I FORGOT TO PUT A DUMMY LOAD ON (power tubes were in, no guitar was in, everything to ZERO [EXCEPT LARMAR])

Next: Cursed for a minute, Drained the caps, walked away for a glass of water, installed a new HT Fuse, and when i flicked the amp on (standby), the 2A fuse blew. I FORGOT TO REMOVE THE TEST LEAD FROM DRAINING THE FILTER CAPS.

Next: Cursed for five minutes, reset the house safety switch, Drained the caps, installed a new power fuse, AND removed the output tubes (i hear the HT fuse can go if tubes go bad)...... and when i turned it on........ all good, tested heater voltages, rectifier tubes and what not, then held my breath turned the standby switch to ON, bang all fuses gone, humming transformer again.

I cannot believe it, ahh, took my time, all of last month, making sure not to rush anything, and now colossal failure. What is the likely cause? What has gone wrong!?

I've heard leaving that jumper wire hooked up from V1 pin 1 to ground, when powering up, is not good. But let me ask one question, are you using slo-blo fuses? It's been reported that George has used fast blowing fuses in the kits.

Thanks for the reply Mars.

After it blew the 1st time i read up about slo blo in marshalls and ordered some. Expecting them tomorrow.
Its my last ounce of hope.

On a related note i looked up geofex's debugging guide for OT's and in one of the steps it says to measure the resistance between the B+ line and the plates on the output tubes. I assumed that was one of the red wires from the PT and pin 3 on the output sockets. Ypu're supposed to get something close to <1k. But i get something in the M-ohm :s is it buggered?

Alright fuses have landed :)

Ripped out all the tubes and started putting them in one by one starting with the preamp tubes. Everythings all good

And then put the rectifier tube in. When i flicked the standby switch to ON, bang; HT Fuse out.

Is this a typical sign the rect. tube has shorted?

Thanks guys

Yeah, try a new rectifier and report back. Hopefully the PT isn't blown.

Alrighty, good news, the new JJ rectifier I bought today works and the JTM45 is up and running.

Woo!

But I'll whack down some voltages here seeing as think some are high./ Not sure though..

Voltage at wall - Start: 242.4V - End: 241.7V
Bias - V4: 42.5mV - V5: 41.7mV

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
V1 210 - 1.6 3.4 3.4 205 - 1.6 3.36
V2 173 - 1.6 3.4 3.4 300 174 173 3.4
V3 239 23.3* 38 3.36 3.36 225 25* 37.8 3.36
V4 - 3.36 402 408 -43.7 408 3.36 -
V5 - 3.37 405 408 -43.6 409 3.37 -
V6 - 407 - 321 - 321 - 406

*in george's instructions these are supposed to be dashes (i.e. i don't know if that means it doesn't matter or there shouldn't be anything there!)

God this thing sings; Balls to the wall!

Thank ya folks
