Choke question

Post by toner » Sat Mar 03, 2007 11:39 pm

Assume all grounding, lead dress, filter caps, etc. are good...

Can the choke be the only cause of ghosting? Has anyone fixed ghosting by installing a new choke?

I have found a fairly acceptable compromise between ghosting and the tone/feel I would prefer from lower filtering:
mains: 100uF
screens: 50uF
PI: 50uF
preamp: 50uF

However, there is still noticeable ghosting with neck pickups (Les Paul or Strat). I was able to almost eliminate ghosting by running 200uF for mains, but I didn't like the tone as much.

I know it's cheap to try a new choke but I'd rather not tear into the amp more if it's not likely to help. Any advice is much appreciated!

I tried swapping a 10H in place of the 3.3H that came with my Super Bass kit......the low end felt quite different, but alas, little help with ghosting even though you would think it would be a great improvement.
Anything that cuts lower frequencies can help keep your power supply from modulating and ghosting -- Lead spec with split cathodes and smaller couplers definitely helps compared to Bass spec, given the same filtering. Or lower output brighter pickups. Maybe even going to 2.2K screen resistors? Might cut back on screen current and help some but I haven't tried it.......

How felt the low end different?

Larry
The fault almost always is sitting in front of the amp

Hard to describe.....in that amp it sounded more "metal" as opposed to just "rock." Something sort of scooped sounding after the swap.......... :?
That same 10H choke went in my JTM45 and sounds great there.

Would the change from a 3.3h choke to a 10h be a big jump in h,values? I am thinking 5h, 7h in between the two? just trying to get a better understanding of this, wondering why you didnt try 5h or 7h? bluze

bump

Has anyone reduced ghosting or improve their tone with a new choke? Anyone replace the stock choke in a 100w reissue specifically?

I'll probably just have to try it but I'm still looking for comments. :?

Thanks.

I compared 3.6H choke with 40H choke in my 2204 build. With 40H sound was more balanced to me. More pleasant to my ears. So I have chosen this one.

40H :!: Isn't that an extremely high value?

Does a higher Henry value act similar to higher value filter caps (tighter feel, possibly less ghosting) or am I mistaken?

Yeah, I think that 40H is extremely high value too:) But I've got it for free and there was no any choice, except for these two.

What do you mean under "ghosting"?
