My latest build

Post by Structo » Sun Oct 18, 2009 1:33 pm

I can't remember if I showed this guitar here or not.
I bought the body on ebay from a dealer that I had bought from before.

I've had a love hate relationship with Telecasters for a long time.
I built two previously with single coil tele pickups and although I realize that a tele is supposed to be a bright, twangy guitar, I just never could adapt to one.
I've pretty much been a Strat guy for a long time and have built three of those in various configurations. Usually with a humbucker in the bridge.

Anyway, this newest one was routed for P90 pickups and I thought I had to try it.
This has a Allparts TRO-C neck tinted and finished with Tru Oil gunstock finish.
I really like that stuff for necks. Easy to use and provides the slickest feeling finish I have tried.
The body has a quilted maple top with a two piece alder back.
I stained the body with Vintage Amber and a medium brown dye.
Finish is Deft nitro gloss lacquer.

Hipshot hardtail bridge.
Gotoh staggered tuners (no tree!)
The P90's are Toneriders Hot P90's and are wired to a 4 way switch.
.047uf paper in oil tone cap.

1) Bridge
2) Bridge & Neck in Parallel
3) Neck
4) Bridge & Neck in Series for a fat almost humbucker tone

I finally like a Telecaster!
These pickups sound great and the 4th switch position is great.

Sweet build Structo! I see lots of folks getting into P90's lately, and I can't help but think there's a reason. Do you recommend a longtime strat/lp/singlecoil/humbucker lover try some out? That 4th position must be something to behold

Thanks for the kind words.
I have played guitar for over 40 years (not that I'm any good  ) and had never owned a guitar with P90's. Let alone play one.
I know, where have I been?

But like I said I just could not abide the stock type single coils in a Tele.
I know they have their place and if I could chicken pick maybe I would like them more.

But yeah, I like these a lot and they have just the right blend of bite and smoothness to them that make them work well for me and my style. :D

Tom,
Great looking guitar. I just came across this as I was searching for hardtail. I want to build a hardtail strat and am looking for bodies, necks, and parts. Thought I would start here. Any experience with the warmouth bodies and necks? I am thinking about a maple compound radius neck, alder body, 57/62 pickups and all good electronics, hardware... Maybe get it already painted Lake Placid Blue or something like that. I like the oil with natural look of yours.

Nice build!

It's a shame you can't buy MM90s and Silent Circuit from Musicman. It'd be fantastic in this.
