SoZo Caps -- Great In Modded Fenders Too!!

Post by Flames1950 » Mon Apr 12, 2004 11:50 am

All you Fender modders out there (that's right, both of you!) should give the SoZo's a try in your amps as well as Marshalls.
I popped a bunch into my modded '68 Bassman this weekend and was very impressed with the smooth overdrive and honking midrange punch I was getting from my modded Bass channel, running a 250uF cathode bypass cap on the first stage, SoZo .022's in the tone stack, a SoZo .68 for the second stage cathode bypass cap, and SoZo .022 and .1uF couplers throughout. The stock AA864 Normal channel sounds great through the SoZo couplers as well, but I left the Fender blue molded caps in the tone stack on the Normal side. I also still have the 500pF coupler into the PI, but it may go shortly.
Give these a shot in your Fenders, you'll be pleased!! :D

I think its safe to say those caps will probably sound good in any amp they touch...except Mesa Boogie... ew

They might be worth a try in a Boogie. They might clear up the fizz and mud.

Well i for one do not own a boogie and don't plan on owning anyone soon, but if anyone would like to experiment and report that would be cool. If results were good that could possibly alter my opinion about Boogies.

Well somebody can go for it but it won't be me. I steer clear of the Fizz Donkey Mesa's. Too much furry bass cutting into the bass player's turf and they just don't always "cut" like a good Marshall or Fender.

I personally don't think the cats at Mesa Boogie know the meaning of the word "cut". And since you can't polish a terd I wouldn't waste my time putting Sozos in a Boogie.

well....mesa must be doing something right.......they're on every live punk festival i've been too....but i would agree, you can't get a classic rock sound from a mesa

I just changed the tone caps in the vibrato channel of my 68 bandmaster to .022 sozo caps and I am very happy with the result. This amp sounds killer. I also disconnected the vibrato and added a 25k mid pot. Did changing the coupling caps increase the gain of the amp?

Flames,

Don't mean to hijack your post, but have you tried the Sozo's in a Guitar yet?? I've read several post of the telecaster forum saying the are sweet !
Just picked up a new tele, thinking of trying the sozos in the tele and my Les paul.

Since I think we are only fender guys here...this pics for you

Nice!!
I did have some SoZo's in my Strats for a while. They work really well in a guitar but I thought Mallory's or Orange Drops were just as good for guitar use. I didn't hear quite as much difference as I do in an amp. Just replacing the crap-ola stock ceramics with any decent quality cap was the big difference to my ears.

I put some sozo's in my LP and didn't like the sound at all. Really harsh sounding. I put the Orange dops in and they sound really good.
